Quote
Sir John Keegan, who has died aged 78, achieved an international reputation as a military historian, then discovered a talent for writing rapid analyses of international crises as the defence editor of The Daily Telegraph.

Probably the best-reading military historian of the last 50 years or so.  Off the top of my head, I can recommend the following without reservation:
Face of Battle
Mask of Command
Price of Admiralty
A History of Warfare
Intelligence in War

Sad that no new work will be forthcoming.

And how could I forget his book on our Civil War?  As a certified map nut and uncertified terrain analyst, Keegan was able to use his foreign perspective to cut the the heart of some of the more vexing issues in the CW.

I think I have all his books. Given that I am a Library nut, for me to go out and buy a book says a lot. For me to buy every book by an author says even more.

And as a fellow Map Nut and Terrain Guru.  I wholeheartedly concur on his US Civil War book.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.
