I think we need to take a deep breath, step back and review basic trouble shooting practices.

Hey maybe. I don't quite understand how my Droid retails for hundreds and hundreds of dollars, but they couldn't swing for a little bit of rubber over the jack.  =|

I was hoping that by moving it slowly in a circle, and watching the charging indicator, you could identify a spot where the connection breaks.  This might indicate that the charging port is loose on the circuit board.  If a tension in one direction cause the connection to break, then it might work in your car because of how you set the phone down in the car is different from how you set it on the table in your house.
On two occasions, I have been asked [by members of Parliament], "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able to rightly apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.
