Bought a new H-P multifunction machine to replace my aged LaserJet 4 that finally bit the dust. I can get it to print, but the install CD that came with it refuses to load the software and drivers so I have no utilities, and it won't work as a scanner. It prints only through a universal PCL6 driver.

The only on-line help I could find on H-P's web site thoughtfully provided instructions for manually installing the drivers -- if you're running Windows 7. I'm running XP, and the instructions don't work. I have been completely unable to find an e-mail address, phone number, or any other contact info for H-P.

Well, no. Mine is (allegedly) a LaserJet 1536dnf MFP. I suspect H-P thinks MFP is an acronym for MultiFunction Printer, but I think it's really an acronym for several words not allowed on this site.

Yes, I know. Those are the same that come on the CD with the machine. I know because I already downloaded and tried to run both the full version and the "lite" version. neither will finish step 2 -- they time out.

And all the on-line help is specific to Windows Vista and Windows 7. No help available to those of us running XP.

It is clearly time to upgrade. I still run XP too and I have only begun to encounter compatibility and support issues during the later part of this year. Most things work well, but the writing is on the wall. The industry is leaving it behind. Looking back, I really am surprised at how long XP has lasted.

Don't use Windows auto install.  Use the disk which came with the machine.  Been there and done that.

I started with the disk that came with the machine. It times out on the second step of the installation.

Did it work for you? If so, how? My computer isn't exactly slow. It ain't the best, but it's about a one-year old Dell Duocore.
