Mosquito Deleto?
« on: May 13, 2006, 06:45:18 AM »
We get a lot of skeeters in my back yard, so I'm thinking about getting one of those propane-powered mosquito control units like the Coleman Mosquito Deleto.  Does anyone here have experience with one?  Do they work as advertised or should I just napalm the back yard?

TIA.

I've never heard of it, but the name got a laugh out of me. When it comes to bugs ruining my outdoor relaxation time, I'm all for the napalm.

Very expensive and questionably effective. Last ranch I worked at, we had 5 of them set up around the 12 acre housing area; never noticed any lack of skeeters, and the internal traps never got much play.
Go for the napalm.

Reverberating Carbonizer with Mutate Capacity. Get's 'em every time.

p.s. - Short of a good freeze or a stiff breeze I've never had much luck with any type of skeeter control. And citronella-anything is only good to make your burger taste funny.

Haven't tried one, although I've been wanting to.  Somebody told me to try Sportsmans Guide.

I use a propane fogger and diesel based insect fog (usually available at a farm supply store, although Sears used to carry them).  The fog comes in half gallon or gallon sizes.  Note: It does not keep over the winter.  Electric foggers are available also, I just don't like dragging a cord around.

We have been having good luck with the little pellets or donuts you throw into standing water to kill the larvae.  Sandy bought a bunch on closeout at WalMart the other day.

We also use the bucket candles with citronella in them.  Place several around the porch or wherever you are lounging.  WARNING:  Watch the little kids around them.  I would hate for one of my grandkids to get a hot wax burn.

Is the mosquito deleto anything like the mosquito magnet?

Take the whole "propane-based insect control" concept to a whole new level, and use a flamethrower.

I have no experience using any mosquito killing or repelling device other than 'Off', however I read somewhere that these devices attract mosquitos by emitting carbon monoxide (or is it carbon dioxide?) I will say that my anecdotal evidence is that the emission of carbon monoxide does indeed attract mosqitos, as my riding lawnmower seems to attract them big time.

So my questions based on that would be

a) From how far away are mosquitos attracted to (xyz)? If it's from hundreds of feet away, it would seem that the attraction to the device would bring as many mosquitos into your own proximity as into the range of the killing device.

b) Have you got the device set up in such a way as that you hazarding your own health from carbon monoxide poisoning?

I could see such a device working if it is set up as a 'lure' that attracts the mosquitos away from people and towards the device, and doesn't attract more mosqitos from out of the area than it attracts away from people. It seems like this would be much more effective without being hazardous in an area that has excellent ventilation with a limited supply of mosquitos, say a giant tent that has screening that allows free flow of air, yet only allows a few thousand mosquitos in at any given time through entrances that are constantly being opened and closed.

Propane powered fogger. Fogs the area with a  permithrin fog...or as I call it creeping death.

We use some type of machine at work, not sure of the brand, but they work fine.  The thing to remember is that they attract mosquitoes before killing them, so if you have one, place it away from the area you want to use.
