Anyone here built up an Xtracycle?
« on: January 14, 2012, 07:13:45 PM »
I've got a donor cycle and am now trying to decide between the following two kits.

http://www.xtracycle.com/cargo-bicycles/xtracycle-cargo-kits/classic-kit/freeradical-classic-kit.html

The Freeradical Classic is what most people think of when they think of an xtracycle.  The advantage to this is that it can carry some heavy loads.  The disadvantage, for me, is that it costs $500.  My cargo cycling is going to be mostly groceries or laundry.  Which makes me wonder if this might be what I need.  The Eco.

This costs $300 and will do what I want, carry groceries, laundry, etc.  If I decide I need the cargo capacity I can always spend the extra $170 for the bags that come with the Classic.  I would also need to buy or build a deck, $30 or so.

Normally this would be a no brainer, I'm cheap, but for some reason I seem stuck on buying the Classic instead of the Eco when the Eco would probably work just fine.

What about building a trailer?

Whats your donor bike?

I would want disk brakes, my tandem with cantilevers was scarey

Harold, that trailer weighs 27 pounds!  That's a whole 'nother bike!

The donor bike is a Specialized Hardrock Disc.  I'm going to trash the stock Hayes mechanical discs and replace them with Avid BB7's.  I've got them on a recumbent and they are great brakes, especially for the price.
