Really Long Hose Clamp
« on: February 05, 2012, 09:41:14 PM »
I am working on mounting up the winch control box under the hood of my rig.  The best place I have found for it has no good mounting options.  However, I can mount it to the air filter housing.  The housing is metal and quite stout.  What I am thinking is to use a really long hose clamp (the housing circumference is 43").  Has anyone seen anywhere to buy such a clamp?  My backup are those really long wire ties, I would just prefer something I'm not going to worry about ever breaking.

Edit:  wurds r hard

Buy several clamps, take them apart, and screw them together end to end

I have a very large stainless clamp around here somewhere. I'll look for it tomorrow.

If I needed something metal right now, I'd use this.

I found 12" stainless screw "hose" clamps locally at a plumbing supply wholesale house.
The clamps are are sold by the corresponding nominal diameter  pipe size.
Do the math

x12" = 37.5"+ tag end

They do make them larger.  Search "Fernco Clamps"  and see a 14"-16" size - product # 248-300
http://www.fernco.com/plumbing/flexible-couplings/stainless-steel-band-clamps
That should do the trick.  Any plumbing supply house worth a drip can special order Fernco.
Call your local Grainger branch, too - may be a special order.

Another option is the strap used to hang pipes- 1/2" wide, galvanized and perforated that Jim posted - cut it to length and use a nut and bolt.

drill a couple of holes in the housing and mount a bracket.

What do you have against baling wire?

The length of the hose is irrelevant, the diameter is what is important.

It only connects to the winch itself which is exposed to the elements.  Too many stories out there of the control box not being adequately sealed so I am moving it under the hood.

Why do you say that?

It's a bracket.  One end attaches to the box, the other attaches to whatever you screw it to.  Cordless drill and three tecks screws = done.  Maybe bend it a little bit.  I think you're over engineering your solution.

Is the clamp you're looking for.  Any local HVAC house will have one for <$10 as well.  I know my local Johnstone does, but they don't sell to the public.  The very long 1/2" thick cable ties would work as well.  Harbor Freight usually has those.

Click "any diameter hose clamp"...it's a package of 5 drive things and like 10 feet of strap for $44.  Use some of it for this, and save the rest...I'm sure you might need this again.

There are not many options for spaces in the engine compartment for the control box without doing more rearranging than I want to.  The other thing I want to avoid is poking holes in the air filter leaving me with the strap option.  The problem with that mount piece (besides needing holes drilled) it is a friction fit on the control box itself.  The control box will be upside down in my design with its cables running under the air filter housing.  In this design, gravity would be working against me using that part.
