Online Privacy
« on: March 21, 2012, 07:21:15 PM »
An earlier thread discussed a Firefox add-on called Collusion.  I loaded it on to Firefox and found it both interesting and frightening.  At this point it does nothing but point out the problem.  It has no native way of actually fixing it.

Enter Ghostery.  It is a program that blocks all the barnacles websites add to your browser.  It does a credible job announcing the placement of a barnacle as  well as a way to banishing them.  The only downside I've noticed so far is a slight decrease in page loading speed.  APS seems to limit itself to a couple cookies which I will add to my white list.

Yea, I've seen some pretty suspect connections being made when I surf the web through a proxy that prints incoming/outgoing connections.

(it's "ssh -v -C -N -D 9000 user@yourlinuxboxblahblahblah.com" in case anyone is interested.)

Interesting tool.  I'll check it out.  I've been looking for an ad on that can block cookies except for whitelist

Does Ghostery do it retroactively, clearing out old crap?  Or just current incoming?
WHATEVER YOUR DEFINITION OF "INFRINGE " IS, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT.

230, from playing around with it for a few minutes, it just blocks new incoming stuff...  now if you want to clear out your existing cookies from the browser, that is easy enough to do...  If that's what you're concerned about.  If you're worried about the data about you that's already out there, there ain't a thing you can do about it (at least that I know of)....

I found another interesting site at selectout.com .  It appears to be a registry of tracking sites which allows you the ability to tell trackers that you want to opt out of being followed around.  I nuked my cookies and then went to selectout.com to register.  Seems selectout.com places a cookie on your machine telling the trackers you've opted out.  Not to sure I approve.  In any case using selectout really lights up Collusion.
