I'm pushing 69 years.  I've watched many Olympics, summer and winter.  It never fails to move me when I see athletes from the four corners of the earth vie with one another in a spirit of peaceful competition.

And then the reality of the world shows the Olympics to be a spectre; a phantasm; an illusion; a glimmer of how it should be rather than how it is.

Why?

It's because evil walks the earth.  Evil surrounds and whispers sweet promises in the eager ears of those who elevate selfishness to the point of mass murder and steely fisted oppression.  And worst of all the evil of creeping incrementalism that substitutes the freedom of individualism for slavery of collectivism.  The saddest part of all is how so many suffer while so many deny the reality of the existence of evil; who rationalize it; support it; celebrate it while denigrating and smearing the voices of reason.  Sigh..............................

I, too, love watching Olympic competition. It is a glowing example of the good that humans can accomplish.  Few things tug at my heartstrings like watching an Olympian stand on teh podium and shed a tear as their national anthem plays. Even better if it's the American flag in the top spot.

As for the evil part, I take solace knowing that good men and women around the world are willing and able to put on a uniform, or pick up a gun, or even just take a stand to combat that evil.  It's just too bad that these men and women rarely get the recognition they deserve, and the evil stands so proudly in the spotlight.

I do have to say, in line with grampster's mood, it's depressing that anti-aircraft missile batteries must be installed on residential rooftops to safeguard the event.
