GSG 1911 troubles and possible solution
« on: June 29, 2012, 07:21:28 PM »
I bought my GSG last year sometime, but haven't really been pleased with it. The barrel bushing has a tendency to slew around and nick the guide rod, and generally foul the gun up. I have already tried a replacement rod from GSG, but they sent me the same, weird, cruciform guide rod that seems to be the cause of all the troubles. And the gun still exhibits the same problem.

But this guy is selling round-profile, and longer guide rods that would seem to help.

I think I'll give it a go.

Is there any reason you can't just put a standard spring guide with a plug in the gun?

I dumped the full length guide on my TRP early on just for ease of breakdown. With the two piece Springfield FL guide rod you needed to use a hex wrench to take it out.

Neither of my 1911's have fl guide rods and they are both tack drivers. Maybe not bulls-eye competition accurate but then again neither am I, so maybe they are and I'm not!
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

My guess is, the GSG only looks like a 1911.

Or, maybe not:

Quote
And speaking of parts, one extremely cool thing about the GSG 1911 .22 is that it has a high degree of parts interchangeability with standard .45 1911 parts. This list includes: slide stop, barrel bushing, ambidextrous thumb safety; mainspring housing (and internal parts); grip safety; disconnector;  hammer and strut; sear; sear and sear spring; grips and grip screws; magazine catch; plunger tube assembly, and trigger.   ---Gun Review: German Sport Guns (“GSG”) 1911 .22

So, barrel bushing is standard 1911, according to this guy.   Which means the plug should work.  Fit, anyway.  If a standard guide rod will work would depend on what the back end of the barrel was like.  I'm betting it's unlike a 1911.

It has a high degree of parts interchangeability with a 1911, but still has some differences.

Here is a picture from the internets.

Here is a list of interchangeable parts

Barrel Bushing
Front & Rear Sight
Hammer
Trigger
Grip Safety
Main Spring Housing
Thumb Safety
Sear
Disconnector
Sear Spring
Grip Panels (but not the screws because they're in metric)
Mag Release
Sear Pin
Hammer Pin
Plunger Tube
Plunger Spring

I have never run a 1911 with a FLGR before. My experience with this gun makes me a little wary of them.
