Normally, I would think that it's too bad the bad guy wasn't permanently removed from the gene pool, but in this case I'll make an exception in that it's a good thing that a 14 year old won't have to deal with having taken someone's life.

But it sounds like this kid knew what to do, from not answering the door for strangers to getting siblings upstairs and retrieving Dad's pistol when someone broke down the door.

Taking a life is always a serious thing but is not always a bad thing.
Our society has put such a stigma on killing that the whole Mark of Cain thing gets pushed over even on to righteous homicide.
I don't think a justifiable killing should be celebrated with balloons and champaign (at least not publicly ;) ) but neither should it be treated like some horrific tragedy.

Kudos to the younger for acting appropriately under extreme pressure.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Agreed.
