Additional car wanted
« on: June 26, 2012, 09:35:37 PM »
My daily (well, weekly, don't ask) driver is a 99 F250 super duty turbo diesel.  I'm considering a sedan or wagon with a diesel, preferrably with manual transmission, but DEFINITELY NOT (another) VW.  Had a B4 body Jetta TDI, and it did not give good service, even tho' I bought it new and had it religiously serviced by Teutonic monks, per the manual.

There's a cult of the w123 body Benz out there, discontinued in '86.  I dimly recall some other oil-burners, including a diesel Camry, iirc.  What does the brain trust here recommend?  Like to keep the cost in 4 digits, if possible.

I'm not a brain trust.  But is diesel a hard requirement?  I've had good experience with my '88 Toyota Camry in high school/college and my '97 Honda Civic for the last four years.  Both manuals, few problems.  My Honda, in particular, has been a gem.  Replaced the clutch master cylinder and the battery since 2008.  That's it.

For a little car with good mileage to tool around in I'd recommend something like that.  They aren't usually real expensive either.

Diesel cars are few and far between in the US, especially with a manual transmission. 'Fraid your search is going to be a hard one...

Yep, if I'm going to buy one for myself, gon' be a diesel.  I have been a fan of Nissan, Honda, and Toyota econo-boxes, and they are plentiful, and give good service, so it is tempting, but i just "want what I want", and right now, it's an oil-burner.  I have had 3 VW diesels, 4 if you count one I bought my son.  It's like an abusive relationship I keep coming back to.  Never, ever again.  Two, I bought new, and not a damned one of 'em made 100k mi.

Failing this quest, my wife gets a roadster sporty-car, and I get her '07 Camry, which wouldn't be all bad.

Truth.  The EPA has decided that diesel fuel is the work of the devil, therefore even though all Europe is tooling around in Turbo diesels (see Top Gear) getting  mileage that would make Prius owners cry, they won't allow them to be imported.

And a manual transmission?  They keep those right next to the unicorns....

Because they make hybrids/electrics look down right retarded. Can't have the Trabant Volt be undercut by a dirty diesel, now can you?

This...  I have a couple of coworkers who drive Prii....   They started bragging about how they get nearly 50MPG....   I got on the laptop, pulled up a couple of different diesel cars.   With mileages *well* in excess of 50MPG...  And showed them to them.

They flat out refused to believe that *anything* could get better mileage than their smug-mobiles....
