Ghost towns fascinate me and I would love to spend a few (?) weeks just cruising from one to the next aound some of the western states. If anyone has a better list than that photo collage, please share it.
Found these 2 sites.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ghost_towns_in_the_United_States and http://www.ghosttowns.com/.  I sorted the list on wikipedia by county and was able to then go to the ghosttowns.com page and find actual, although limited, information and locations for several near me.

I'm taking another class with Carlos Schwantes, this semester. He has the gall to brag about having visited every county and parish in the United States (so jealous). Anyway, here is a picture he took of Bodie, California.

If it casts a shadow it's restorable.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Looks like a typical ranch in Montana  =D
Freedom is a heavy load, a great and strange burden for the spirit to undertake. It is not easy. It is not a gift given, but a choice made, and the choice may be a hard one. The road goes upward toward the light; but the laden traveller may never reach the end of it.  - Ursula Le Guin
