First ever hitch hiker
« on: July 29, 2012, 11:14:14 PM »
Took the kayak fishing for the weekend at Makah Bay (ocean side by Neah Bay - NW corner of CONUS).  Fishing was slow Friday and Saturday.

Today though was a great day of fishing.  Got to a good spot, dropped my line and before it even made the bottom, BAM, fish on!  It was a greenling, but it came up with a hitch hiker ling cod.  Sadly the ling let go a few feet from the surface.  Tried to tempt it back but no joy.  Got the greenling in the kill bag and dropped the jig back down.  Immediatly got another greenling, then a third one.  By then I had drifted off that spot.

Reset to another area.  Took a little while but picked up a barely legal 24" ling.  Time is short so into the kill bag it goes.  Normally I might have let it go to try for a better one.  Moved again and about half an hour later I hooked into a decently large cabezon.

Moved on again.  Picked up what felt like a smaller fish.  Then it A LOT stronger.  Yeah baby, another hitch hiker.  Got it up to the surface and saw a 14" or so greenling thoroughly hooked in the mouth.  Rather greedilly attached to its back half was a 30"+ ling cod.  Took a few tries but finally found a corner of its mouth to try and get the lip grippers in.  Got it in the boat and it went ballistic.  Administered the wood shampoo and it calmed down a bit.  Managed to keep that greenling too.

Tried to pick up another cabezon, but ran out of the short time I had available today.  Still for barely 3 hours fishing that was pretty good haul.

That is a very good haul for 3 hours. Do you have a fsh finder on your kayak, or anyway to mount one?

Nice!!!

Beginning of July I went camping w/ family down in Brookings, and got to do my first ever fishing out on the ocean.   A few family members went out on a fishing charter...  And in 2-2 1/2 hours we had limited out.  I had a greenling and 6 black rock, the last of which was easily 8 pounds.

We had one heckuva fish fry that night and the next couple nights... :)

Gotta be careful of the ling cod.  Spearfishing in Baja with a friend, the friend nailed a good ling cod and put it on the stringer.  We used looonnnngggg stringers as the result of another friend losing a short string and some wetsuit to a bull shark.  With the ling stringered, we continued hunting.  The ling recovered consciousness, ID'd the so-and-so who shot him/her and swam up and bit my friend on the, um, backside.  Luckily, the bite landed where the wetsuit jacket overlapped the pants, and my friend's injury was not serious.  We did, though, get that bleeder out of the water...

Not that hard, really, once you have a decent idea of the area.  I just went to a general area and looked for kelp beds.  Fished around the edges of those kelp beds.

That is why I bonk and bleed them then put them is a bag (insulated, with some ice).
