you guys got mad at me for saying patriot act was OK under Bush, meaning we needed to keep on electing R's....I guess you guys were right, as usual.

Dear $deity, I was angry at folks on chat forums back in Patriot Act days.  I kept trying to remind people that laws never go away, and must be weighed by the damage that can be done with them by the politicians you hate most, rather than the ones you trust right now.

My Patriot Act arguments were prophetically correct, except I thought it would be Hillary not some obscure regional senator.

My wife has finally agreed with me that the PATRIOT Act -- which I cursed from day one -- was, is, and has been a bad idea.

Or, more correctly, a BAD IDEA.

I remember the priceless look on her face when she learned that Biden took credit for crafting it.

Yeah.  Bad Idea.

It's an old story.  Which bothers me even more. Why were the news agencies not trumpeting this from every available corner?

My dear old mother sends me articles like this every week.  They all seem to come from Alex Jones...or someone who talks about Alex Jones.  I usually spend a few minutes trying to verify if there is any truth to the stories....but all searches lead to the same Alex Jones source...or someone quoting Alex Jones.
She is 85 years old and is convinced that the Kenyan born Obama has prison camps and body bags waiting for us, and that the world will end if Mitt doesn't get elected.
Personally, I'd like to take a baseball bat to whoever this Alex Jones is.

huh. If you learned that a neighbor had seriously been considering abducting your daughter, but had decided against it... would you be generating a lot of zomg, or writing it off as something that wasn't done? I swear to God, you're actually Stef Cutter aren't you? That's the only way I can reconcile such moronic attempts at spin...

http://www.scragged.com/articles/stunning-innovations-from-the-tsa

This is a perfect example of the sort of wheel-spinning that bureaucrats love most.  The TSA knows that there's no way government officials would let themselves be braceleted on airplanes, and there's no way the public would permit themselves to be braceleted as long as government people were seen to ride bracelet-free.

Thus, there's no possibility that this "research" might result in solving the problem of bad people hijacking airlines and thereby cut into the TSA's lucrative monopoly of shoving airline passengers around.

So why do it?  These boondoggles let officials like Paul Ruwaldt write fancy letters, look at equipment demonstrations, get courted by vendors, and generally waste time while looking busy.

Bureaucratic nirvana, brought to you by the longsuffering American taxpayers.

and heres the interesting reference to the letter we can't see

bold and italics mine

i know the authors are fine journalists but one would hope they would know where faa headquarters is.
and i would dearly love to see the body of the letter since the desk jockey said "in addition it is conceivable"  a pop quizz did you know that devices like this are already in use and have been for years?  not on any flight most of us will take though

So is the government really that interested in this bracelet?

Apparently so.

According to this letter from DHS official, Paul S. Ruwaldt of the Science and Technology Directorate, office of Research and Development, which was written to the inventor whom he had previously met with, Ruwaldt wrote, β€œTo make it clear, we [the federal government] are interested in . . . the immobilizing security bracelet, and look forward to receiving a written proposal.”

The letterhead, in case you were wondering, is from a U.S. Department of Homeland Security office at the William J. Hughes Technical Center at the Atlantic City International Airport, or the Federal Aviation Administration headquarters.

In another part of the letter, Mr. Ruwaldt confirmed, β€œIn addition, it is conceivable to envision a use to improve air security, on passenger planes.”

A lot of us bought the baloney after 9/11 that we needed an iron grip to repel the barbarians.  I was one of them.  Man, was I wrong.  DHS and its various tentacles is going to be the death of this Republic.

Well, you were right -- but the .gov is doing it wrong.

What we NEED is much tighter border security; a LOT fewer visas; a LOT fewer immigrants, especially middle easterners (do we REALLY need more Pakistanis to manage Quik-Marts and budget motels?); and some serious profiling instead of idiotic, feel-good/accomplish nothing "screening" at airports. There would be no need for all this idiocy on domestic flights or trains or buses if we just kept the barbarians outside the walls.

Politicians and bureaucrats are considered productive if they swarm the populace like a plague of locust, devouring all substance in their path and leaving a swath of destruction like a firestorm. The technical term is "bipartisanship".
