So did that take care of the fleas  ???

Maybe when they took the cat to the vet, they said something about "killing the vermin" so the vet handed them a form authorizing euthanasia for the cat (which they signed!)  - a natural mistake.

So it all worked out to the good.

Conlon's 24-year-old son, Jesse, took Lady to the Broadway Animal Hospital last week and unknowingly authorized the cat to be put to sleep after he says he was handed the wrong forms.

Read everything they put in front of you for signature.  Or at least skim through it.  Some of those term&conditions you are asked to agree to in order to do stuff on the internet are pretty horrible.  Folks have sent their pets off to a dirt nap (this is not the first one it has happened to) and agreed to have body parts removed because they did not read what was shoved in front of their face before signing on the dotted line.  Often those agrements are carried out by folks who were not involved when the signing of the paperwork was done, and just as the customer does they rely on the accuracy of the paperwork to guide them.

I'll bet the vet was not there when the kid signed away all of Fluffy's nine livers, and I'll also bet the vet tech who carried Fluffy in to meet the doc was not there when Fluffy was brought in.  They looked at the accompanying paperwork and proceeded as instructed.

When I brought my dogs in to be put down the vet brought all of us into his office and asked a few questions about why and discussed posible options.  He said he does not agree to put pets down just because the owner wants it done - he will suggest alternatives like turning them over to a shelter (not run by PETA) for adoption and will flat-out refuse to take the pet as a patient if putting the animal down is merely a convenience to the owner.  Maybe all vets need to be involved in the signing of orders to euthanize pets just so there is no mistake about what's going to be done.

My bet is that unless the cat was required to be licensed the owner is SOL.  Not licensed means the cat was not even property, so no recovery for distruction of property.  Damages for "emotional trauma/distress" are going to be hard to get, unless she sues her son for being stupid.

But, now that Fluffy is gone - should the vet give them a copy of this book? http://www.amazon.com/101-Uses-Dead-Simon-Bond/dp/0517545160

When we took Skamp in for her final vet visit (congestive heart failure), we didn't get an opportunity to "just sign the paper" and leave.

One of the vets sat with us and went over the options (ways to keep her alive, costs involved) and then, once "the decision" had been confirmed, we had another discussion of options (disposal, burial, cremation, ashes->urn, etc.).

There was simply no opportunity to "just sign" and be done.
