Comet ISON
« on: September 28, 2012, 10:42:35 PM »
I'm putting this one in my Google calendar so I don't forget about it. Apparently it's either going to be the brightest comet ever seen, a dud, or something in-between. :)

Lucifer's Hammer! I'll be watching this one.
Personally, I do not understand how a bunch of people demanding a bigger govt can call themselves anarchist.

It looks like the Mayans were off by a year.  That's going to throw a monkey wrench into all the conspiracy theories.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

I'll be to tired because we will all be riding bikes and farming to eat

If it's going to be viewable in daylight, it has to be pretty close. Lucifer's Hammer was viewable in daylight too. :O

While I was aware the atmosphere interferes with astronomical viewing, it was really brought home seeing Hale-Bopp's tail appear roughly five times longer in rural, high elevation, Idaho than in coastal Southern California.

Get the heck out of Dodge, or any city!
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

Hyakutake (sp?), though less well known and a year earlier than Hale-Bop, was actually more spectacular for me. Some friends and I went on a high country backpacking trip to view it when it was at its brightest. I remember waking up at least a half dozen times each night just to stare at it.

I didn't spot a prediction for the closest point of approach.  Did anyone else?  Paging Tim Hamner, Tim Hamner, please pick up the white courtesy phone...

Near the end of the article they said it would get within about 800,000 miles of Earth.

That's pretty dang close, actually - a bit more than three times the distance to the moon.

I hope they got their math right ...  =|

But as it proceeds through its orbit and reaches its perihelion, its closest point to the sun (a distance of 800,000 miles) on November 28th, 2013, it could be bright enough to be visible in full daylight in the Northern Hemisphere, perhaps even as bright as a full moon.

It still might be a good idea to divest yourself of any holdings in the San Joaquin Valley and coastal California.  ;)

We are doomed, the EMP apocalypse will happen between dec 2012 and feb 2013, all the computers and sattelites  will be fried
and only old fashioned guys with slide rules and telescopes will be able to tell when it will hit us, but they will be silenced by the zombie theocracy.
