Fixing a VGA cable
« on: October 09, 2012, 04:47:22 PM »
Conference room at my building has a broken VGA cable end, on a long buried run. Found this replacement end that's solderless. http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=3231 Not super comfortable trying to do such fine soldering in the field (especially with the cheap soldering iron we have) so I'm hoping to go solderless.

Long buried run, so you can't just order out a custom length cable.  <scowl>

That end looks like it might work.  The few times I have tried soldering a VGA cable end, it didn't work well.

Soldering a VGA cable isn't bad at all... if you have four arms, 20/10 vision, the fine motor skills of a master jeweler, a soldering iron like a sewing needle, and the patience of Job.

Convert to multiple BNC connections and do a mechanical splice

I saw the multiple BNC to VGA thing, but this is going into an open port in a conference table at a high end medical building. It needs to not look ghetto or jury rigged.

Run the bnc conversion under the floor and come up clean with another VGA
When the cleaning crew cuts another drop cable, replace it with another cheap 6 foot drop

They will screw up your terminal connected VGA end in the first week

Conference room management is all about keeping Murphy at bay.

No access except at the cable end. The mount point is recessed into the middle of the table, and the cable run is through a false pillar on the table. Very fancy looking and a pain to work on.

There's enough free length of cable for you to actually work on this, I hope.  Murphy says "probably not".

A little play, but not much. I'm thinking most people use dongles to connect instead of trying to plug the table VGA directly into the laptop though so hopefully it'll be ok.

The solderless connector looks like the best option.  I wish I'd have seen those a few years ago.  As long as it's protected with proper strain relief you should be ok.

IB-6 looks like what we have, or a close approximation. However, found out at the staff meeting today that it's not our responsibility, and we just try to limp it along because the folks who are in charge of it suck at it. Looks like I'll be getting a contractor out...  ;/
