Local TV crew doing report on concealed carry
« on: October 22, 2012, 09:04:54 AM »
Stopped by to see some friends who were shooting a match the next county over Saturday and was invited to join them for lunch, along with the news crew from a local TV station (WSAV). It seems the news crew was putting together a special report on concealed carry and one of the shooters invited them to the match. The reporter actually participated in the match and the cameraman (who'd never fired a gun before) had a quick lesson and got to put rounds downrange when the match was over.

At lunch, the discussion mostly revolved around guns, as you might expect, and I think we really opened their eyes a bit. We talked about the responsibilities you take on when carrying, the necessity of getting good training, the disgust we all feel when the media gets it wrong, the increase in sales as the election draws closer and why that is, etc. It was a GREAT opportunity to sit and have good conversation with someone who can send a clear message to the community on our behalf.

The reporter also has the contact information about the director of my training group and is going to contact him to ask him to be a consultant to WSAV - to explain crimes and any gun or self-defense related news items that come in so they're getting it right. This could be a tremendous opportunity for G-Tac, but also a chance for us to "set the record straight" when things happen and the rest of the local media is getting it wrong.

Funniest moment: We're all sitting around the table and the cameraman says, "So is a Glock a type of gun or a brand of gun?"
Needless to say, we set them both straight on that and on AKs. :)

The report airs on Tuesday, Nov 30, so we'll see how they do with it. If they put it up on the website, I'll post a link.

For the Glock question, isn't it sort of both?  I guess it depends on how you define it.

Congrats on using the good opportunity.   =D

Fail.  Glock is a brand of handgrenade.

Doesn't that depend on the caliber?  I thought that the 9mm versions were handguns, and the other calibers were the grenades?

Sounds like the back-story to your usual, "I was holding the power of life and death in my hands" reporter-meets-gun article.

When talking to journalists, try to film the interaction yourself, or at least record the conversation.

This is just about your only defense against creative editing back at the studio.

I got a facebook friend request from the reporter. I'm going to send him the journalists guide above. He seems to have a reasonable sense of humor.

Slightly related....
Oklahoma gets (licensed) open carry November 1. Yesterday a local TV station was doing a story on the latest mass shooting. They used that to segue into a story about open carry.

Yes, because if I'm going to commit a mass shooting, I'm going to open carry on the way so no one will suspect that I'm up to anything

First check if your state is one-party permission (mine is, so I use my iPhone voice memo function to record stuff whenever possible)...if it is, then just record it, the journalist doesn't even need to know, and if they screw you over, you can really bend them over.

I am guessing you have never been misquoted, or had words taken out of context.

I meant in a more non-journalist usage of one-party recording.  However, there is a very fuzzy line between out of context/misquoted and libel, but without a recording, you would never be able to prove either.  In general recording is like carrying, you probably won't need it today, or even this year, or maybe never, but if you didn't and you needed it, you'd wish you had.

Georgia's "one party must be aware" with regard to recording. But I likely won't be talking with him much going forward. He's interested in having Gary work as a paid consultant on crime related stories to be sure they get it accurate, which would be a miracle in itself.
