Italian scientists jailed for failing to predict earthquake.

No, this is not The Onion. Aside from the blatant stupidity that is blaming someone for failing to predict an act of god, can anyone say chilling effect? What's next, jailing meteorologists who fail to predict excess rain that destroys crops or leads to flooding of a town?

Why can't the Pope predict earthquakes? I don't get it - he's supposed to have better connections to acts of God than these guys.

I like your italian. Of course now I'm picturing the retarded cartoon crocodiles.

I figure sue when your golf game gets rained out.

As for suing for a flood, could be epic, at least the countersuit against the people that built in the floodplain for the 5th time.

But what if they had predicted the earthquake, people acted prudently and evacuated (including moving major assets and manufacturing plants) and then nothing happened?  Should they get sued for the costs because they were running around like Chicken Little?

"Earthquake scientists"     Hey, HuffPo - in the Red States, we call them seismologists.  :P

What do you call six scientists in prison?

A good start.

(I don't know why, but I find that joke very funny. I'm sorry, I won't let it happen again.)

I think the religious folks like to think that forces of evil such as Satan have no power in this world unless invited to have power, by infiltrating the integrity of people.  Devilish forces only act through corruption of man and not by manipulation of inanimate matter.

I think.

Whereas God hurts us physically with crashed planes and earthquakes and so on to show he lurvs us.  Or something like that.

Italian scientists jailed for failing to predict earthquake

It makes a great story, but is that really what happened?  Or did the experts tell the worried villagers there was no danger because the small tremors had already released the bound energy?  In other words, they didn't fail to predict an earthquake, they DID predict no quake.

I can see a case for liability here -- not necessarily criminal liability, but I dunno how Italian law works.

Let's just say Italians don't have a great track record when it comes to legal issues involving the sciences.
