Handwringing Over Demint Chairing Senate Commerce Committee
« on: November 01, 2012, 07:58:11 PM »
Boring, right?  The Politico does some serious handwringing over Jim Demint taking over the senate Commerce committee when / if republicans take the senate.  The entire article is devoted to analyzing the impact on special interest when Demint implements his republicanteaparty ideology.  Of particular note is concern over his relationship with Jay Rockefeller.  Seems the previous republican poobah, Kay Hutchinson, had a cozy-work-together attitude which the special interests found convenient.  With Demint maybe not so much.

Of particular interest to me was the top of the article specified the commerce committee having oversight of the TSA.  No where was it discussed.  Interesting because Demint is not a TSA fanboy.  Should be interesting.

Privately, lobbyists for interests spanning every major transportation mode said they worry about how DeMint — known more as a Tea Party flame-thrower than a policy craftsman — would treat their issues in that leadership post. Commerce has jurisdiction over most matters related to auto and road safety, Amtrak, the FAA, TSA, freight rail and the Coast Guard. DeMint has a penchant for erecting roadblocks to bills he thinks spend too much money and he isn’t known as a bipartisan dealmaker like his predecessor, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas), who will retire from Congress at year’s end.

Good, let him throw of few bombs our way.  The CG is going to take a huge f*cking hit in the sequestration because we don't fit into either DoD or DHS.  If we are going to gut an agency that does a hell of a lot of good for the public and a lot to encourage commerce let's cut the crap out of everything else too!

A more powerful endorsement had never been made.

My thought as well.
