car windshields and bullets
« on: November 06, 2012, 10:42:17 PM »
Has anyone gone any 'mythbusters' style tests on bullets and car windshields?

I've always wondered what rounds penetrate with some effectiveness and which ones don't.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

Interesting. The bullets deflect, but in the OPPOSITE direction to what I would have expected.

I would like to see a similar test with .22lr and centerfire rifle rounds.

Bullets deflect in weird directions.

My shooting buddy just had a rifle and pistol class where they shot into and out of car windshields.  Pistol rounds penetrated in a somewhat predictable manner.  5.56mm rifle rounds did crazy things.

If you can wait until next year for an answer, I'll be attending Kyle Lamb's Street Fighter class.  I think we will do lots of vehicle shooting.

Not really if you think about it.  The bullets go all the way through the angled windshield, which is denser than the surrounding air -- "refraction" (sort of), not reflection.

True...the bullet deflects the way that light would refract. But bullets aren't like light.

After the first 5 or six on target the windshield really won't much of an issue.

I was thinking that .223 is small enough that it might depend on point of impact and how the glass cracks and breaks up around the bullet.
