In 1983 when we came out of the yards at Vallejo our escort boat, torpedo retriever, for our initial dive had to return to port because it was too rough for them. We spent the afternoon and night riding it out on the surface. Round hull submarines aren't really designed to play surface ship. We had the bridge manned all night with the OD and a lookout. we had to rotate out every two hours because it was so cold. 40' swells, first we'd be looking down at the horizon then we'd be looking way up at the horizon. In between we were taking green water over the bridge on a regular basis.
I also had the pleasure of riding through the big storm of '91 that was dubbed "The Perfect Storm" see movie and book. Transiting at 400' keel depth we were still taking 10-15* rolls and getting 100' depth excursions due to the swell. the the CO decided we just had to go up and copy the broadcast.
