Skip ahead to about 1 min for the boat part.  http://www.wimp.com/angryseas/

Whose up for some ocean fishing?  I must be a wuss because my stomach is not doing well after watching the boats.

On a passenger liner bound from San Francisco to Hong Kong we crossed the fringe of a typhoon.  Even with passive anti-roll, we had many, many deeply unhappy passengers.  I asked Dad what we were doing.  He replied "about 15°."  When I asked "compared to what?"  Dad said he had several times had his destroyer roll well past 90° and recover.  :O :O

(There followed a tale of a "surfing" contest where several ships bound from Newport RI to the Caribbean successfully rode waves for hours at a time. =D)
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

Oh, HELL no. Uh-uh.  No way.  I got scared, watching it on my iPad.

What was that warship?  Looks like if it took one on the beam, it would turn turtle for sure.

In 1983 when we came out of the yards at Vallejo our escort boat, torpedo retriever, for our initial dive had to return to port because it was too rough for them. We spent the afternoon and night riding it out on the surface. Round hull submarines aren't really designed to play surface ship. We had the bridge manned all night with the OD and a lookout. we had to rotate out every two hours because it was so cold. 40' swells, first we'd be looking down at the horizon then we'd be looking way up at the horizon. In between we were taking green water over the bridge on a regular basis.

I also had the pleasure of riding through the big storm of '91 that was dubbed "The Perfect Storm" see movie and book. Transiting at 400' keel depth we were still taking 10-15* rolls and getting 100' depth excursions due to the swell. the the CO decided we just had to go up and copy the broadcast.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

I wasn't paying attention during the bow on view but that big square helo hanger sure looked like a Perry Class frigate.   I looked around for an episode of "Coast Guard Florida" where an MK who used to be at my station got interviewed.  The crewmen at my station who saw it said the whole boatcrew, except for Murphy, was puking their guts out.   [barf]

In the early 70's we had to take the Forrestal into a small storm to help out a freighter that was in danger of sinking. We had water breaking over the flight deck on a regular basis. The galley didn't even try to rustle up warm food, it was cold sandwiches and crackers for those that could eat. Having a boat that size rocking and rolling just isn't right!

1969 on a junket to the Carribean by way of Gitmo.  On a LST.  In a hurricane.

The Quartermaster was lashed to the wheel using something that looked like the belt windowwashers use.  He stayed centered on the wheel while playing games to see how far above the top of the wheel he could go without hitting the overhead.

If there had been land anywhere close by I think BLT 2/8 would have hand-carried that tub to the beach.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!
