Receipt copy colors
« on: August 06, 2013, 04:03:42 PM »
Receipt forms often have a yellow, or yellow and pink carbon copy sheets.  Is there a convention for which color form is for what purpose?

I imagine original goes to purchaser, one color goes to whomever processes the order (such as pulling an item from a lumber yard) and the last one goes to accounting.

A vertical blue or magenta streak on the receipt means the cash register is about out of paper.

No receipt means it's really out of paper.

Traditionally pink goes to Accounts Receivable and canary goes to customer.  You can thank NCR for that - based on the clarity of the copy, which has quite a bit to do with the contrast between the paper and the NCR imprint.  Other colors are assigned to other lost corners of Hell as the particular company sees fit.

NJ pistol permits are like this. 6 pages I think. Might as well get a punch set and a hammer.

I always keep the white and give the customer the yellow. I used to have to do five part forms due to one warranty company wanting a copy sent to them plus a copy in the box with the failed product. I no longer do service for that company so it makes it a bit easier.

What about the tractor feed strip that gets torn off at the perf line? Where does that go?

Don't forget all the little "dits" from the paper tape punch. Those were so much fun, dump the full bin down the back of some ones shirt or fill their shoes.

Now you are showing my age.

Anybody else work with 16-baud?  Lots more little dits and by the time the bin overflow alarm sounded there was enough pressure so that the little boogers spewed all over the place when you pulled the bin to empty it.  Invariably one of them would get lodged, perfectly aligned, on a relay contact, causing hours of tracing circuits to find the fault.  (Or you learned really quickly to check the contacts with a wire pick before playing hide and seek with the electrons.)

What about "waterfall" decollaters and bursting machines?  That was my "start" in the computer business.  Then I ran away and became a logger, etc for a couple decades.  Nowadays, I wonder why I came back  ;/

Not all that long ago. The Navy kept the old stuff a long time. We were still using IBM cards for supplies inventory as late as '85. I even got pretty good at sorting them by hand when the machine was on the fritz when I was TAD to the warehouse during overhaul in '83.

Last I heard, several years ago, the Navy was still using mechanical analog computers for fire control in their big ships.

Still?

Oh, and VAX computers for their digital stuff.
