Helicopter crash caught on tape

Apparently Top Gear has a Korean spin off. One of the segments was a race between a Huey Cobra and a ZR-1 vette. After the race the chopper pilot misjudged his altitude aqnd augered in. Thankfully no one was hurt, but it is impressive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EsoWpTO2qg

Yep. Lost altitude awareness and crunched in. OUCH, that was one expensive landing.

With helicopters in ground effect, you can caught where your rotors are sucking you down. Adding more power only draws you down. You have to go forward to "break suction".  Not the case here. Pilot error...

Ouch is right!

In the combat flight simulator of which I'm so fond, it is often a challenge to remember which aircraft have the elevator authority to pull you through a split-S at 3,000' AGL.

I have a terrible memory.

The people are in Korea, speaking Korean.  And they put subtitles in Korean?  :facepalm:

I think that helicopter sequence was shot in SoCal or AZ someplace judging by the non-Korean pilot and the landscape.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

On March 01, 2012, at 1220 mountain standard time, N197LE, an experimental exhibition Bell AH-1F helicopter experienced a flight control malfunction while maneuvering and impacted the ground at Coolidge Municipal Airport (P08), Coolidge, Arizona. The helicopter was operated by the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation and Museum Inc. under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. The pilot and mechanic received minor injuries; the helicopter sustained substantial damage.


The pilot initiated a right 150 to 180 degree turn reaching about 200 feet above the ground. He was attempting to neutralize the controls in preparation for a normal approach for landing when he realized the controls were "locked and unmovable in any direction." The pilot stated that the helicopter remained in the same rate of turn with the same collective pitch and cyclic input as when he had initiated the turn. The helicopter maintained the same arc through the turn and descent until it impacted the ground. The pilot further stated that he was reaching to activate the emergency hydraulic switch at impact.

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

I love flying in helos but there is so much that can go wrong with them it's scary as hell if you think about it.

So I try not to think about it!
