Attempted rape
« on: July 31, 2006, 09:32:27 AM »
No, I wasn't raped, nor did I rape anyone.

A family friend was the victim of an attempted rape on Friday night.  It wasn't successful, because she was able to beat her attacker off with a rock, killing him.  There were two female witnesses (Who didn't do a damned thing to help) and they went with her to the station to make a statement.  Family friend was released.  I figure if she was released and not held, they believe that it was self defense, right?  Anyway, she's quite shaken up.  She kept telling my dad and sister that she "didn't mean to kill him."  They tried to make her see that she did what she had to do.  Also she told them that "I believed he would've killed me."  Of course, in my town, she can't go legally armed.  So women here are forced to resort to beating their attackers with rocks.

Thoughts in no particular order

- she kept her head, stayed in the fight, and survived.

- she needs to discuss this with her minister, trusted friend, counselor of choice. She needs to deal with what happened and work through it until she realizes that her attacker was the master of his fate, not her.

- it wouldn't hurt to speak to her attorney just in case. Even if the DA rules that she was justified, that wouldn't keep the dirtbag's family from trying to cash in on a wrongful death lawsuit. Yes, I know I'm cynical in my old age, but that's the world we live in.

Last I heard, there is no ID on the dirtbag, as he is homeless.
She actually was homeless for quite a while. We helped her get on her feet, and she moved to Oregon, got a job, and an apartment. She was down here visiting a friend.

Well, duh, if she only needed one rock, it must have been a .45! Smiley  But in the papers it'll be listed as a "Granite Headcrusher, the preferred weapon of the Intifada.  Capable of being disassembled into several smaller Gravel Bruisers with only rudimentary tools, and usable with only minimal training, these weapons of mass destruction are nonetheless available for civilian purchase (without a background check) even by children, and can even be found in our schoolyards and playgrounds.  Please contact your congressional representative and ask him to act now to prevent further carnage."

Back on track, thank the gods for people who can keep presence of mind and defend themselves in a situation like this one.  Especially since there are places where people can't legally carry an equalizing weapon.  Your friend did well.

Very cool, as long as it wasn't one of them evil black assault rocks!

Reminds me of one of the favorite family stories about how one of my aged great grandmothers back in the 50's confronted and beat the snot out of a burglar in her home with a BROOM. I'm not sure what caliber it was. Tongue

Andrew Jackson was shot by a foolish individual who was then severely beaten by Mr. Jackson's walking stick - by Old Hickory himself, of course.

Killing the attempted rapist prevented dozens, more likely hundreds of other rapes.

Maybe some of us were trying not to be too flippant about a woman who's very traumatized?

I'm not really seeing all that much "flippance".  I see a lot of supportive posts, what am I missing?

Supportive?  Yeah, we're all glad she defended herself, and we'd love to pat her on the back and cheer her on.  Unfortunately, she doesn't seem ready for that, much less jokes about the situation.  Imagine the terror she must have experienced, in order to overcome and beat to death someone who was probably much stronger than she.  Perhaps she's afraid it could happen again, and what are the chances she'll escape this time?

Of course, I'd still feel free to joke about it, but this is a friend of dasmi's, so I correctly guessed that it would bother him (her?).

Yes, we are all supporting her choice to defend herself and not be a victim. Sorry if our ways of expressing it seemed flippant. I'm sure noone intended to offend. I certainly did not. I hope dasmi will pass on our support and our thanks as well. He got what he deserved and I'm glad she gave it to him. I wish there were more like her out there.

Incidentally, she also helps confirm my theory that even if you were to dump all the guns in the sea so that no more existed the first thing someone would do is pick up a rock and use it for a weapon. I applaude her strong basic instinct for survival. Given a similar situation I'd hope mine was just as strong.

fistful: him

Everyone else: I don't take offense, but is a touchy situation for me and my family, as we've helped this old woman to get her life back together after some very, very tough times.  This is the kind of thing she doesn't need, just as she's on an upswing.  But, she is incredible fiesty, and I think she'll be just fine.
