M&P Shield 9mm & Jogging Rig
« on: April 29, 2013, 03:12:47 PM »
Anyone own a M&P Shield in 9mm?  What do you think?

My wife wants something a little smaller & lighter than her 9mm OACP 3.5"bbl 1911, but that still has a thumb safety if a semi-auto

She wants it for jogging & other active stuff.  Probably try out one of these holster deals:

She is willing to suck up more recoil than her alloy-frame 9mm OACP 3.5"bbl 1911 to make it smaller & lighter.

The default if she can't find anything is her Kel-tec P-32 (.32ACP), though she is not keen on the relatively light DAO trigger (long, no-nice, and no thumb safety).  I'd really rather find her something with more punch than a .32ACP.

I will have her fondle a Ruger LCR in .38spl and see if she is OK with its size & trigger pull.  I have doubts, because of the cylinder width.  I will also have her look at the Sig P-380 (Colt Mustang clone).

It was my first choice but I couldn't find one at an agreeable price and waiting lists around here are LONG.

So don't have one personally, but I've handled a friend's. The thing is damn nice and illl probably end up with one eventually.

Just keep in mind its main attribute is that its thin, not a pocket gun by any means. Especially with the extended mag the grip gets somewhat long but its not to bad. The sleeve thing on the extended mag also has a tendency to ride up a bit, which imo makes it useless. Fine for the range, but for carry is ditch it and just have the bare mag.

I just bought an M&P 9mm Shield on Saturday, pick it up Tuesday. From the M&Ps I have shot before, I like the trigger and ergo. To me, it is a good effective carry gun, that matches or beats the qualities of others for significantly less cost.

In terms of trigger feel, I liked the Sig P938 better, but it is more expensive. The P938 (9mm only, SAO) has some of the look and feel of a 1911, although internals are completely different. If I recall correctly, the P938 has "cocked and locked" capability. It is metal frame construction, but as light or lighter than the shield. There are a few youtube reviews out there for it.

The P938 has a sister model, the P238 which is slightly different exterior, and comes in 380acp.

The PPS and XDS are also significant players in this size. I liked the feel and layout of the PPS. XDS offers this small size package all the way up to 45acp, whereas the shield stops at 40. I'm not sure about the PPS offerings.

I’m not saying I invented the turtleneck. But I was the first person to realize its potential as a tactical garment. The tactical turtleneck! The… tactleneck!

m&p Shield is on my list of next guns to get.
They are very hard to find in my area.
I might settle for a M&P 9 compact for the time being.

Aside from width, the compact is actually smaller than the shield.
