Song fragment in my head
« on: July 01, 2013, 11:52:45 PM »
it's bugging me.  I don't particularly like OR hate the song, I just want to figure out where it came from -- probably from one of the music/comedy variety shows back in the 70's.

"Don't be like the Lone Ranger" (repeated several times) then something about "stay down-to-earth with me"  Or that's what I remember, it might actually be totally different.  Any idea?   Sonny & Cher?  Captain & Tennille?    My google-fu is usually pretty good but I'm striking-out.

ETA: and the tune resembles "Games People Play", but that's not it

"Don't get above your raisin',
Stay down-to-earth with me."

Or maybe a parody of that song?

Heard the original a hundred times, being the son of a Bluegrass junkie. The internets are seeming to suggest it's a Flatt & Scruggs tune, but a lot of results for the Ricky Skaggs cover.

That's not it, but I like it :D  I wonder if that's where I picked up part of the lyrics tho'...  I'm sure I must have heard Flatt & Scruggs before; I used to listen to bluegrass a lot.

ETA: I'm listening to Ricky Scaggs, and the "stay down to earth with me" is right.  So it's a false memory, or a Frankenstein song, cuz there's nothing even remotely similar to "like the Lone Ranger" in it.

Okay it's pieces reassembled by my subconscious: "Raisin'" (Ricky Skaggs version), "Games People Play" (probably Cher, rather than Joe South), and just the title "Don't Feel Like the Lone Ranger" (Sonya and the Sensations).  That is why couldn't remember any more lyrics.  Thanks, now I can put a stake thru its heart.

Another question, what is this cute little guitar that Ricky is playing?  http://youtu.be/fPYxj3QBkIs?t=4m  It has six strings (and all the tuning pegs are on the same side) but it's just a little bigger than a mandolin or a ukulele.  Might be a custom job.

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

I don't know much about the old Lone Ranger
Still I look to find a raisin to believe

Croce was awesome! What a loss to the music world when he died.

I had a dog named for that don't get above your raisin's song.

the funny part, He was purchased as a conformation show prospect from a crappy breeder (mom didn't realize it at the time of purchase) and, yep, he never got above his raisin's!
