Car window tint durability
« on: July 09, 2013, 08:04:04 AM »
I'm thinking about getting the windows of my new car tinted.  However, I have two children and am concerned about durability.  Assuming I go with a quality product and have it installed by professionals, is the typical aftermarket window tinting durable enough to stand up to kids (normal touching, bumps and such from toys, etc)?  I have two girls, so I shouldn't be seeing abuse such as Hot Wheels being run up and down the glass.

Any brand better than another?  What about long term durability (>5 years)?

Think of it as a dark version of the screen protector on your phone.  Same material.  General touching/rubbing, no problem.  Anything sharp or abrasive = gouges and scratches.  The good thing is that it's easy and relatively inexpensive to replace tint on a single window.

Thanks, that's good to know.  I also didn't consider that a single window could be replaced if damaged.  That makes things considerably easier.

What Brad wrote.  I have done it on several autos and been satisfied with the higher-end tint films.  Last job lasted 8 years (until got rid of auto) without discoloration, only a couple places where it got gouged.

Just be sure to clean the windows with the appropriate, non-ammonia cleaner.

Before or after the tint is installed?  I would have the install done by a shop.

For general cleaning.  Ammonia-based cleaners like Windex will discolor (or more likely remove) the pigmentation layer.  This is also why you should never, Never, NEVER use windex to clean your sunglasses.  Dad tried that.  His sunglasses turned into regular glasses with a neat vignette effect.
