DIY CCTV cables
« on: July 02, 2013, 05:24:07 PM »
Anyone have any experience installing BNC compression connectors onto RG59 cable?

If so, can you recommend a (reasonably-priced) compression tool and connectors?

Thanks,

Easy as pie.  Last year I need to do a bunch of RF connections so I picked up a Klein crimper and a DataShark cutter on Amazon.  Just checked my order history and both are still available.

Klein VDV211-048, $20.68
DataShark 70029, $13.52

The only 'gotcha' is to be careful with the cutter.  The replacement blades in the handle are easy to snag a careless finger on.  Sharp, those.

I used PPC brand RF ends and they worked flawlessly.  I think PPC also makes BNC but a quick search on Amazon didn't show any.  (Apologies to anyone who saw the Amazon link I first posted.  That was for a different connector)

Just made 6 the other day, and they worked.  It's pretty easy to do.  I think what tool you buy would depend on how often you want to do this....

I'd go with what Brad posted.

Thanks for the input; I've got the Monoprice version of the DataShark.

Was considering the Klein tool along with one made by Valley.

I made my living for a lot of years making radio cables.  Klein tools were always the first choice.  And I've made literally thousands of solder, crimp, screw-on, or any other kind of way to attach a connector to just about any coaxial cable you can imagine.

I ended-up with the Klein tool, and am using Ideal connectors.

Works great, as long as I ensure that the cable is completely inserted into the connector before using the tool.

My camera system installation is now progressing nicely.

Again, thanks for the help.

I believe Ace hardware may have them.  I impute this from the fact that they have all kinds of RJ- connectors and crimpers at my local one at 17th and Sheridan in Lakewood CO.

Might wanna give your local one a call.
