Japan builds a naval warship larger than a Burke destroyer
« on: August 06, 2013, 04:14:55 PM »
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/06/izumo-warship-japan-largest-since-world-war-ii_n_3712405.html

Looks like a helicopter carrier, although in the available pictures, I could not see any elevators to carry things to and from the hangar deck.

I saw that too.

I was relatively unimpressed.  Also noted the lack of elevator.

All the speculation of it being a potential VTOL jet carrier is hype, IMO.  Looks like whirlybirds only.

Third slide of the slideshow shows what looks like an elevator on the aft starboard side.

Ah.  I had a javascript blocker stopping the slideshow from showing.

Doesn't look much like a destroyer to me. Looks a lot like an aircraft carrier. I was thinking it might compare with our WW2 "Jeep" carriers, but it turns out that it's actually much larger than those, and nearly as large as our WW2 fleet carriers. This new ship is 250 meters (820 feet) long. According to Wikipedia, a WW2 fleet carrier was about 270 meters (900 feet) long.

At least they didn't name it Soryu, Hiryu, Akagi, Kaga, Shokaku, or Zuikaku.

With it's length and displacement, the Izumo would fit right in.

What are you talking about? It has an elevator on the starboard side behind the island.

Kobayashi Maru

I don't think we have any commanders with Tiberius as a middle name in our armed forces.

Do we?

Be interesting when the pictures and specs come out. Close in size to our current L-class ships minus a well deck( I think). Our next gen LHAs do away with the well deck too supposedly. Back to the LPH future! No reason it couldn't fly F-35s, we deck launch with not cats or ski jump bow. What is stanchioned off port forward of the island? 2nd elevator? Technically a destroyer. LOL.

Whoever made the slideshow sure liked those streamers on the bow.

Last I knew armament was what determined classification not hull size. This is why our destroyers have grown a bit themselves but not to this size. AFAIK this is the newest destroyer in the USN and it's not nearly as big as the new Jap one. : http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/01112.htm

IIRC DDG 112 is bigger than what we called a destroyer in the 70's but smaller than what we called a cruiser. Scuttlebutt was with the Spruance class they had prefabbed areas where they could cut out the decks and drop in some big stuff if the SHTF.
