I guess they didn't get the memo about how having guns in the home makes one less safe.

Derp, sorry. The article was talking about someone recovering in hospital. Wrong guy.

Yeah, that was the deputy that the convict shot.  Good news for him and I was glad to hear he was OK.

Some people wonder why I carry all the time even living out here in the quiet countryside.

It's because fugitives, etc don't call ahead and make appointments.

A gun in the hand is worth two in the bedroom.
Freedom is a heavy load, a great and strange burden for the spirit to undertake. It is not easy. It is not a gift given, but a choice made, and the choice may be a hard one. The road goes upward toward the light; but the laden traveller may never reach the end of it.  - Ursula Le Guin

The homeowner shot the guy after 4 hours? Was he holding them hostage and it took that long for the homeowner to finally gain access to a weapon without being shot himself? The article isn't too clear on what happened.

They gave up trying to lure him outside, decided they'd have to go ahead and make a mess inside.  =)

I can see that, all that blood would seriously fark up some carpet.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

You just can't argue with success, though.  For whatever reason they waited, it must have been the right thing in the end.
