New Gander Mountain opens . . .
« on: September 02, 2013, 04:27:51 PM »
. . . in Round Rock, TX, just north of Austin. They just opened this past Tuesday - I first heard about their new store from radio ads last week, and they've been running TV commercials too.

I've been a GM customer since they had their original mail order business in Wilmot, WI . . . .it must be over 40 years ago now; as a young'un, my Dad and I even drove up there from Chicago a couple of times when they started over the counter sales of reloading components. They began opening retail stores some years later, and eventually took over the Burger Bros. chain in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area where I was working at the time. Went through some re-orgs as I recall, but have been off my radar since I moved to TX in the '90s.

They took over the building that used to be Sportsman's Warehouse. It's about what you'd expect from Gander Mountain, but the whole back of the store is their gun shop, with plenty of rifles, pistols, shotguns, EBR's, safes, a couple of .50s, even some used guns and milsurps. Prices seemed rather high - they had about 5 dozen Mosin-Nagants for $180 each, a Chiappa Rhino (1st I've seen) for almost a grand. Also looked at a scaled down Browning 1911 in .22 LR . . . nice little gun, but at nearly $600, I figured it wouldn't do anything better than the .22s I've got now.

Centerfire ammo was AVAILABLE . . . at a price. Examples: 1000 round cases of Federal AR223 for ~$600, 350 round boxes of CCI Blazer Brass 9mm for ~$120, as well as bulk packs of .380, .40, and .45 ACP. The only common round they DIDN'T have was .22lr, other than birdshot.

We're getting one in Cville shortly. It will open in the next couple weeks or so.

Around here the gun-themed Gander Mountain has had ammo recently, including .22LR. I recently picked up a bunch of Federal Automatch. Guns themselves (including pre-panic) are priced through the roof... gen 4 Glocks at $700? No thanks.

The House of Goose failed around here thanks to really crappy customer service.  They hung on in the beginning, in spite of the nearness of Green Tops and Bass Pro, as well as a  bunch of LGSs with reputations ranging from abysmal to really, really bad.  It was as if they recruited the very worst gun shop counter folks from every place and then held a competition to see who the worst of the worst were - and made them managers.  The runners-up got to stand behind the counter and do whatever the heck it was they did instead of selling anything to anybody.

Green Top eventually moved into the empty goose house, tripling their floor space and, most importantly, their parking lot.  Everybody considers it a win all the way around.

It's nice to read the rest of you missed out on the drama.

stay safe.

The one thing I miss most about GT being in their old space was the possibility of finding a dusty treasure tucked away among the stuff on the shelves.  The move gave them the space and opportunity to go through and organize all those misplaced items.

But, I'm happy to see them thriving even after GM and BP moved within a mile of their old location.

Mounted Gander is not known for reasonable prices.

Their sole virtue is having reloading equipment and supplies on hand.  Oh, and actually having a gunsmith on staff.

Past that, high priced guns, high priced everything, and they never, ever had the loss leader gun in the sale flier in stock.

Yes, it's a running joke in Wisconsin.

Their gun business model is based on low volume gun owners, and impulse buyers who are not "hooked in" to the Internet, or even just a copy of Shotgun News, and don't know gun values save for "Guns' sposed to be 'spensive" etc.

They're always worth checking out though, sometimes something will slip through whatever insane formula they use, and they'll have it priced better than Internet/Mail-Order + Shipping + FFL x-fer fees.

Ammo, even pre-panic was anywhere from 20-30% higher than other retail outlets, and about 50% more than online.
I promise not to duck.

I lol'd heartily a few years back when I walked into the local GM and found 100 rd WWB .45 (same as sold at Walmart) priced at $60+/box.

Also read that Bass Pro Shops is building a 104,000 square foot store in Round Rock . . . compare this with Gander's 50,882 square foot "superstore" and Cabela's 185,000 square foot store down in Buda.

Now, if we only had more places we could actually shoot around Austin . . .

So you are OK with going back to their old spot to go to Bonz for ribs?

Yeah, I know you go through Woodbridge and then NoVa (all known down here as North of the Ni) where there are some other places that smoke ribs as opposed to doing something to them over the charcoal grill in the back yard.

stay safe.

we lost our closest gm (50 miles west of us) due to two floods in a ten year period.  the first put 3 ft of water in their showroom, and the second 7 ft.  aside from dicks, they were the only large sporting goods store within 100 miles.

I've never eaten at Bonz.  We normally hit GT as we're traveling south to NC or north from NC.  We get our fill of BBQ in NC (eastern NC style ftw) or near home (Carolina Brothers in Ashburn).

Dad was wondering if they were pricey. Figures. Well, if we want clean and Wall O' Guns, we'll just keep going to Old Dominion.

When we were talking about it, he mentioned that he wants The Academy. I mentioned that some of you guys go there and he looked a little green with envy.

Neither the two Gander Mountain stores I frequent have much in the way of reloading equipment or supplies on hand.

The Gander Mountain in Baraboo actually shut down their gunsmith shop.

As for prices, this is a bag of 50pcs Winchester .270 brass, which was one of only two bags of new unprimed brass to be found at the Madison Gander Mountain:

Stopped by tonight.  The only part of the store that will get business from me is the used guns section.

I was shocked to see a MAG-7 in the shotgun section.  I nearly asked how much it cost, but then decided I didn't need the "weird gun" temptation.

Same ammo situation as in Hank's post

That they haven't sold out of "common" rounds like .223 and 9mm is a good indication that their prices are too high.

They had a boxes of that new Barnes  load that I almost bought up (the corbon DPX that I usually carry seems to no longer exist on this plain of existance),  but I couldn't see a price tag.

the one "near" us, last time I was in had shrunk their handloading section considerably.
