375H&H Encore?
« on: September 17, 2013, 11:24:06 AM »
I may be able to get a 375H&H barrel for my Encore at a good price.  I currently have a 6.5x55 bolt gun and a 300wm barrel for the Encore (as well as 209x50 ML barrel), so I don't need the 375 (or 300 for that matter) for hunting.  However, I would like something in more of a "big bore" just for kicks.  I reload and cast, so I can take the 375 down or up in power as needed.  The price is such that I can probably sell the 300wm barrel to cover the cost of the 375.

Powder types and consumption is about the same between the two, but factory ammo and most component bullets are more expensive (roughly 2x).

I don't hunt anything that requires a 375 or 300.  This would be more of a range toy.

So, should I pull the trigger (pun intended)?

I've got a .375 H&H rifle, and don't think full loads in an Encore would be much fun.

Here's a video of some guys shooting one . . . perhaps with "reduced" loads: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcyXUemcCpY

This would be an Encore rifle, not the handgun.

I don't expect full power loads to be fun, so I'd probably keep them at a lower power level.  My plan was a 250ish cast bullet at 2300-2500fps.

A moot point now.  Someone bid on the barrel with only 6hrs to go (how it got this far with no bids and a $150 opening price is a mystery).  I'm not going to get into a bidding war for a "toy".

I might offer a low bid at the last few minutes if it hasn't gone above its current price.

If you want a .375 caliber, what about a .375 Winchester?

I was going with the Encore barrel because it had the potential of being inexpensive (as low as $167 shipped).

He wanted the .375 H&H because it caught his attention.

Soon, something else will catch his attention and he'll be off on it. Sort of like that dog in the animated movie... SQUIRREL!

Meh.

If I had my choice, I'd get a 50AK barrel.  Something about 20" long...  Apparently it works well with 750gr 50bmg projectiles as well.

A 445supermag would be nice as well since I could use my current 44mag components.  I'd only need new brass.

The 375 was attractive mainly due to the price.  I wouldn't pay a premium for one.
