I knew before I opened the link that is was crap imported from China.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Getting harder and harder to find dog treats. Is it possible to make dog jerky treats, and how would one do so?

Same way you make people jerky.

ETA: You might want to stay away from the spicier recipes. Depends on the dog. One of my Shepherds loves jalapenos.

Salt is still better than the cadmium/mercury/lead/PCBs that is probably going to be found in chinese dog treats.

We use to give no salt added green beans as treats to our Border Collie mix.  When we were at the training classes people looked at us as if we had 2 heads, when we were using the green beans.

Risking typical APS thread drift.....

Suggestions on making jerky?? I have a smoker that I like to use. I like jerky for me, but I have found that most jerky in the stores has either a Chinese or nebulous origin.

I would enjoy some good jerky where I don't need to worry about increasing my heavy metal levels!!

Jerky is easy to make if you've got a little time and some low heat. It can be done with a regular oven or a smoker. It can even be done on a grill if you can monitor it closely.
I've been permanently banned from the (wife's) kitchen for sausage and jerky crimes committed in the past so I can only use my smoker. (She can be kinda fussy about "her" kitchen. Besides, it can tie up the oven for up to 24 hours.) My dream is to someday have a butcher and kitchen area in part of my workshop but the barn isn't quite nice enough or sanitary enough.
I've got 20 pounds going in the smoker tonight.

Back to the thread. My dog gets lots of pieces of sawed up deer bone for treats. As I butcher I put the pieces in a big bag for the freezer and just bust some out with a hammer when I want a handful. He also gets raw carrots, green beans, and beets from the garden. He is 8 years old, looks great, and has never had an unplanned vet visit. Yellow lab, 98 pounds of solid muscle, good teeth, joints, coat and eyes and he can still jump a 4' fence like a deer.
What we have here is failure to communicate.

Mrs. B. makes them herself. She'll boil up a big chunk of liver, then cube it, spread out on baking sheets and freeze 'em. Take a few out as needed. Doggies have all loved them.

She also found a recipe - or six - for making baked treats. Pureed liver, flour, etc, and a bit of garlic powder. These are also very popular. They're cut into small cracker-type pieces. These will keep for many weeks in a Zip-Lock bag.

Is this just the Jerky-type treats, or is it *all* treats? We do buy the "milk-bone" type, but not official brand name stuff.

Uncured has about 1/4 the salt. Also, he only gets a couple bites a day anyway.

Dozer gets the ribs from deer too, but they are gone by summertime.

I got some weird looks with my dog at training class, too. My dog loves Cheerios!

Which is a good thing, because with two small children in the house, there's a LOT of Cheerios on the ground.

The only commercial dog treats my dog gets anymore are the Kirkland rice and lamb dog bone treats, which are apparently made out of the same stuff as their dog food, but which for some reason my dog salivates over and I use as part of her teeth cleaning process. Other than that, her treats are human food. My dad will often bring her one of those $5 Costco cooked chickens, which he likes to say are half the price of dog food. Meat gets stripped from the chicken and made into broth and chicken chunks that get mixed into her regular dry dog food. She also eats bacon with me once in a while as a treat, which I portion control because of the sodium and stuff. I'll also share a steak with her. All better than commercial dog treats IMO.

My dog mostly gets bits of her regular kibble for treats.  Once in a while she gets a bit of meat from my plate after I am done.

Carrots are good handy treats for your dog.
You can slice up sweet potatoes and put them in the dehydrator, excellent treats also.
We don't give out dog anything made in china.

Thanks for this thread, just threw away a half a bag of jerky treats made in China.  I checked all the other dog treats and they are made in USA.

Mostly the dogs get the cheapest people-treats I can find.  That, and the "milk bone" style treats that I buy at Aldi.  (I keep telling the dogs they are just kibble but they won't listen)
"It's good, though..."
