I never bought into any of the conspiracy stuff but this just seems odd.

Just a quick wiki check, Columbine HS did do a major remodel 4 years after the shooting.  They did demolish parts of the school and rebuild and rename the library.  So, yes.  It's been done before

Those people in Sandy Hook are all weirded out over the event. I saw in the nooz that some group (SAF?) had planned an event in Newtown on December 14 to promote firearms ownership, and there was such a fuss raised about the date that they moved it to the 15th. However, I'm sure on the 14th there will be all manner of memorials and ANTI-gun activities, and nobody will dare point out the hypocrisy of using the memories of the victims to promote one side of the debate while not allowing their memories to be associated with the other side of the debate.

The $50,000,000 isn't actually being poured down a rathole, it's being funneled into the pockets of various and sundry builders, suppliers, and tradesmen - probably unionized - and a good part will certainly make its way back to those holding the purse strings, in the form of campaign contributions, the hiring of family members, or outright graft. Here in the Austin, TX area, a few years ago they were talking about tearing down some under-performing schools - because, well, I suppose the buildings didn't let the kids learn. 

Questioning the competence of teachers and bureaucrats was off the table.

The issue that I am seeing in other places is that this gives fuel to the tin-foil crowd.  They are saying that this is just part of the false-flag cover-up and that they want to destroy the building because there really aren't any bullet holes and all those people are really alive. 

As for the motives, I can't say I am too surprised.  Just look at how most people are funny about living in a house where a murder occurred decades ago.

Here's some anecdotal evidence about graft...
The Milwaukee school district owns a large school building named 'malcolm x acedemy' that has been closed for 10 years or more. A nearby sucessful charter school offered to buy the building, but the school administrator has been stonewalling. A local legislator has taken up the issue and has proposed a law to force the sale of unused or abandoned school properties (pretty rampant with a large decline in the city's population) to other educational organizations.  The school district is pre-empting this law by, get this, selling the building to a developer for $2 million who is going to lease thde building back to the school district for $4million. http://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/news/2013/10/15/mps-touts-advantage-of-malcolm-x.html

OTOH, the money being funneled to unions and back to congresscritters...it happens all the time. It would be one of those impossible-to-keep-quiet conspiracies if it didn't happen all the time. Who's going to go public with something that everybody knows?

There are incredibly stupid people in charge here. We're working on it but it is an uphill battle. The only hope is the Dems have pissed off enough of their own with all this gun grabbing legislation and forcing us to apply for permission to keep our property. I'm slowly getting through the process because every time I start to get into it I get pretty pissed off. It aggravates me to no end. Only time will tell in this situation but I hear plenty of otherwise sane average everyday non gun people I've known for years talking about shooting govt officials. Scary stuff.

Exactly, I agree 100%. My standard response is to stick my fingers in my hears as in "I didn't hear that."

To me the scary part is the people it's coming out of. The last ones you'd expect to think that way. The average Joe is frustrated and pissed off. And for clarity, the one guy that comes to mind foremost wasn't all about the gun laws, just the policies in general. So it's bigger than just the gun issue.
