Cigars
« on: December 03, 2013, 06:31:27 PM »
I have a criend who likes cigars. I need to send him a belated wedding present, so I want to buy him a box of cigars. What kind should I buy?

I do have a local cigar store. If I buy a box will I be able to just ship it in a flat rate box or does it have to be humidity controlled? I could buy online and have them shipped.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

Do you know what he likes?

A sealed box will have no problem being shipped.

Go with one of the name brands. H. Upmann, Hoyo de Monterrey (Excaliburs are my personal faves), Romeo y Julieta.

Do you know if he likes a strong or mild cigar? If so, ask the cigar shop which of the name brands to pick out. Most of them make both a strong and mild version, and you can't always tell from the wrapper (dark doesn't always = strong). You could also hedge your bets by sending him a variety pack of different cigars that you pick out as singles. If you're worried about humidity, most cigar stores will sell or even give you a small shipping wafer that absorbs water and keeps more than enough humidity for shipping in the continental US.

One of my most strenuously thought out and best gift giving accomplishments was a small cigar box and several cigars as a Christmas present for an ex boyfriend.
He really liked the Romeo y Julieta.

There is a local cigar shop in town. I went in and they were very helpful with recomendations. Because I wasn't sure what he would like and he liked trying new things, I got several brands and made a little assortment instead of buying just one type.
I would suggest finding a nice shop in your town and see if they'll help you out. Mind you, a store that specializes in cigars, not one that does ciggerrettes as stock in trade.

Buying cigars for a friend is pretty much a crapshoot.
Send him a gift card from jrcigars.com

While I'm primarily a pipe smoker, I do enjoy the occasional Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva in a Corona size (about 5 inches, medium diameter).  In fact, they're the only cigar I like any more.

Romeo y Julietas are good, ditto for Montecristos and Perdomos.

H Uppmann Robustos or a gift cert. go with one of the online places, a local shop will usually charge a lot more.
You can also get sampler or variety packs.

I don't smoke cigars often, but when I do, I make it a Romeo y Julieta
