Train crash in NY
« on: December 02, 2013, 05:37:30 PM »
It's been in the headlines, so I'm sure most of you have already heard about the commuter train that derailed just outside NYC Sunday morning. Just saw a report that the train was traveling 82 MPH ... speed approaching that curve is supposed to be 70, and the speed for the curve is supposed to be 30. Engineer says he applied the brakes and "they didn't work."

I'm betting he was texting instead of driving his farking train.

Yeah.....   if the story is correct, "brake failure" doesn't sound like the case here......

Quote
He said the throttle went to idle six seconds before the derailed train came to a complete stop — “very late in the game” for a train going that fast — and the brakes were fully engaged five seconds before the train stopped.

Quote
But he said investigators are not aware of any problems with the brakes during the nine stops the train made before the derailment.

Seems the engineer is supposed to have let slip that he fell asleep at the throttle and woke up just before the whole thing tipped over.

Exxon Valdez skipper.  LI Ferry captain.  Italian ocean liner captain.  LIRR engineer.  And a host of others.  At least Casey Jones knew what he was doing.

I've always wondered if Casey and Delilah were related . . .
