Another submarine bursts into flames during repairs
« on: April 07, 2015, 12:54:20 PM »

We will all remember our own nuclear sub that burst into flames during repairs a few years back.  Although in that case, it was deliberately set by a shipyard worker who wanted to go home early.

Junk. Betting the russians don't scrap it though like we did ours. And if it was new construction I'd buy the line about no nuclear fuel on board.

What is it about shipyard welders and subs?

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!

Small, confined spaces, hard to fire watch, runs like a chimney once it starts, lots of extra flammables during the work. Oh, and whatever the Russian equivalent of OSHA is.     In short, it's a wonder that any are not on fire.

I read in a followup story about the Russian sub that it was extinguished by flooding the dry dock and opening hatches to flood areas of the sub.

We spent 18 months in the yards at Mare Island in the early '80s. Shipyard workers ran the spectrum from decent, hard working craftsmen down to "are your sure it's human?".
Spent many an hour standing fire watch with yardbird welders.
We had 3 minor fires while in drydock, 2 were started by smokers tossing a butt into a pile of their own trash. One was by a welder that was too cool to wait for the mandated ships company fire watch.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Do the russians evacuate the compartments before flooding? Or after...

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

I like jokes about russian industrial safety, but now that I think about it, could a russian firewatch be much worse than whatever gets dragged in from the streets of Portsmouth, VA? Lowlifes. I've spent about 2.5 years of my life in the yards, 6 months of that I lived on the boat while it was in. I really hate the low-end workers such as firewatch, painters, laggers and welder's helpers. Criminals, smelly criminals.
