why a magnum with a short barrel?  Trying to smoke the target with the muzzle flash?

I think he meant the .44 Special, not the Magnum.

Yeah, I wouldn't even think of running Ruger Super Blackhawk or Desert Eagle .44 Magnum loads in that L-Frame Model 69.

Metallurgy notwithstanding, it's basically a 696 with a longer cylinder and 2-piece barrel.

It's definitely not a Model 29/629, and the pain factor in touching off monster .44 Mag loads in such a light gun, even though they saw fit to install a 4.25" barrel.

Meanwhile Sig is making a 250ish line that is striker fired. Very confused why they didn't do that in the first place. Sig 250 wasn't terrible, but did have an overly long trigger.

I like 240gr at 1000fps for .44cal.   Mild for magnum but hot for special.  Not sure if all .44spl can handle that.

Expensive. Even the one-time surplus W. German police models with the Euro-style heel magazine release are going for north of $1200. U.S. style ones with the grip magazine release $1600 on up it seems.

Gas blowback piston area can get fouled with crummy ammo.

No lead ammo, should shoot jacketed ammo because of the gas ports, and because of the polygonal rifling.

Out of production. Parts and replacement stuff is expensive. Magazines are expensive. HK was never able to get them design-processed to make them in bulk. They all took hand-fitting which added to their expense.

The delayed blowback gas-locked action gets very hot in the trigger guard in sustained fire/range practice. I'm not up on the variants, but newer ones have a plastic pad or guard on the top of the trigger guard hole to protect you somewhat from the hottest part where the piston is, but conducted heat will get everywhere.

Could be considered somewhat large/heavy for a single-stack 9mm.

However, they're built like Swiss watches, and are extremely accurate with the fixed barrel and light trigger pull from the squeeze-cocking taking up the slack, and they have a very low bore axis making for very pleasant recoil management and quick follow-up and target re-acquisition.

Other than the heat from rapid fire/sustained fire, most people consider them pretty dreamy to shoot.

I really wish I had one, and the time a club member let me try his it lived up to it's reputation to be sure. Although I don't want it so much I'd pay current prices on them. Although if I ever see one in decent shape for under $700, I'd be willing to miss a car payment or short the mortgage for one month to get it.

P7M8 is the name of the "shielded" ones.  I second everything you wrote.

One of the guns I had a shot at in the early '90s for 4 or 5 bills.  Buddy ended up buying the selling it.

If only I knew then what I know now about where prices were going on all sorts of stuff...

P7M8- what they said. :)
Since I already own one, the price is not an issue.
So, I really don't have a downside, other than it is a little heavy.
It should probably be a safe queen now though.

Before he left Japan, someone gave my brother an airsoft P7.  Not a cheezy airsoft, either.

The continued mainstreaming of suppressors is quite nice to see.

However, it's going to run into a brick wall come this June when the CLEO sign off is forced onto trusts and corps.  =|

So, has anyone seen an R51 in the wild, at a gun store?

I am pretty sure mine is a P7M8.  It was one of the used police trade-ins in the late 90's.  I didn't know the prices had reached that high for used.  I would sell in a heartbeat for $1600.

Gun Talk Radio interviewed a S&W guy at the SHOT show who said they were bringing back the N frame 357 pistol.  Is that the model just a bit smaller than the 686?
