This Luddite needs a new phern.
« on: February 25, 2014, 04:47:43 PM »
Well, not really "needs".   But it does get old trying to find a pen or suchlike to push the spot where the MUTE button used to be to unlock my 3-4 year old Blackberry Curve.

Seems I can get either a Droid Ultra, Droid Mini, or Blackberry Z10 (which I was told by the sales drone is not at all like my current Blackberry.)

So before I delve in the wilds of the Interwebz in such of such knowledge, I figure I'd ask here.

So what sayeth the hive mind?
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.

Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Of those choices, the Droid Ultra.

The Blackberry z10 is likely to become an orphan at any moment. .gov and a few large business customers are all that's keeping them afloat. And they're actively trying to shop the company and the Blackberry Enterprise Server around as an enterprise mobile software email solution for iOS and Android and could conceivably fold at any moment.

I promise not to duck.

While the Sales Drone didn't mention it, the website shows the I could also get the iPhone 4s.  Yes, it's not the latest and greatest, but then again, neither and I.  Nor am I an "OMG!!11" teenage girl, investment banker, nor ghetto druglord.   I don't use any apps currently, nor play any games.  I do take the occasional pics of my son, but that's about it.

So Driod Ultra or iPhone?

(Did I mention I hate apple, for no reason other then their fanbois.)

If you can get the 4s, you can probably get the Samsung S3. IF that is an option, I'd choose that one, given your hatred for Apple.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

I can get the S3 mini.

Not a hatred for Apple, just their fanbois.   My son has an iPod, which seems to be a good product, as he uses it mostly to play games and read books.  If I could read books on my phone that would definitely be a plus.

I carry an iPhone 4s for work, and my personal Android, a Motorola Droid Razr Maxx.

All else being equal, the Razr Maxx wins hands down for screen size alone.

The Android system is a bit more "open", if you don't count what locking down the particular carrier might do. Apple controls and bans certain apps a bit more often than Google will, and it's easier to get things onto your phone without using the Google Play store altogether. Most Android phones have removable micro SD card memory, and use generic micro USB and micro HDMI connectors, while Apple has no removable chip memory storage, and uses proprietary Apple cables for everything.

Otherwise, both have a pretty robust market of support, you won't go wanting with either.
I promise not to duck.

I usually try to get the latest greatest most stable phone when I get a new phone. Why? Because there is a finite amount of time model specific accessories are made. Also with data plan type phones, you have to have certain internals to stay with a current OS. I usually switch phones when I break mine or when my provider says my phone is outdated and will not run on the new network.

IPhone is good when you just plain want the freakin thing to work.

I type this on an android phone. I like android in general. But I must say, apple does have an edge in just plain working. Android has the edge in being a bit more open, options, and (generally) value for the dollar.

Checking reviews, the S3 mini is claimed to have a better battery life and a slightly larger screen. iPhone has a better camera and (likely) slightly more stable.

Personally, I'd probably go with the S3, but the iPhone is a solid choice. They are, of course, 1.5 and 2.5 years old designs, respectively.

I know you can read books on an Android phone, and I assume on an iphone also.  I've never actually used an iphone, hence the assumption.  Go with Android; if you were to buy an Apple product and like it, you might become a fanboi, and hate yourself for it . . .

Does the rotary dial on any of those phones work as good as the one on my car phone?  Do they come with a nice looking bag and is the cord long enough for a left handed person like me to be able to use one comfortably?

Put Kindle on your phone (iPhone or Droid apps are out there) and download metric s-tons of free and inexpensive books.  Besides making the occasional phone call and using Yelp or some basic arcade games when I'm bored and have a short time before something interesting begins, most of my time is spent reading.  I probably ought to graduate to some sort of tablet but I have the iPhone (got it "free" when I extended my contract 1 year) and still using iOS6 because everybody who upgraded to iOS7 said they hate it, while those who never had anything else say it's OK.  Guess it's like the latest version of Windows vs the one you already have.

BTW - if you have a favorite web site that is an Amazon affiliate, free downloads from Kindle through their site still bring them portions of pennies.

I went with the Droid Ultra.   So far I've made and received phone calls, check my e-mail, and texted my cleaning lady.  (She was sick Monday, so she's coming Wednesday.)

I'm sure at some point I'll use it other features, but for now, it does what I want it to do.
