And yet another computer question -- software
« on: February 15, 2015, 07:52:25 PM »
I don't have Adobe Acrobat, I only have the free reader. I need to convert some large-ish PDFs into Word for editing purposes. So far, I've been striking out with "free" converters. Most of the ones I've been able to find aren't really freeware, they are stripped-down trial versions of buy-it-ware, and they are limited not only in time but also in capability. That's shareware, not freeware. Not helpful.

Does anyone know of a decent freeware application for converting from PDF to Word?

I'm seeing some pdf import add-ons for Open Office.  You might be able to do a three way -- import to OO, save as .doc, open in Woid.

I have ecopy on my computer. Its not free software, so I don't know where to tell you to acquire it from.
If its not top secret and you want to send it to my I'll give it a try. Its sometimes hit and miss.
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

Thanks, but I expect there to be a number of LARGE files to be done, and not all at once. Ideally, I'll find a program that works, either as freeware or affordable.

I just wasted an entire evening downloading, trying, and uninstalling maybe eight or nine converters that advertise themselves as freeware. Most of them choked on a 6-page document, didn't translate the fonts correctly, and were limited to three or five pages for the free version. And two of them put a big, red watermark on every page to announce to the world that the user is too cheap to buy the upgraded version. That's not "freeware," that's what we used to call "crippleware."

To be honest, I am amazed that there doesn't seem to be something out there that will handle this one task. I've got three programs that will convert Word documents into PDFs, they all work well, and they were all free. The universe of freeware applications has a hole in it.
