« on: May 08, 2014, 04:08:50 AM »
My 7th grader is being taught "how to ride a bike in p/e class. 30 plus kids on bikes learning how to use the brakes etc.   On a related note all grade schools have been purged of swings

Well, at least they are not being taught how to hang in the air by their hair.

Yes, removing the swings (due to injury risk, no doubt) but teaching bike riding - publik skool hypocricy at its finest.

stay safe.

PS - did you have to sign a permission slip to expose your daughter to this danger?  Or did the administration think it was OK to just go ahead?
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!

They keep making this eternal vigilance thing harder and harder.  Protecting the 2nd amendment is like playing PACMAN - there's no pause button so you can go to the bathroom.

My youngest daughter's public elementary school not only has swings, but lots of high monkey bars, rock climbing walls (the tallest is about 8') and multi-level playground devices. It's a rather nice playground.

The local parks have some pretty intense playground equipment (how about a series of posts with platforms that you can step from platform to platform without any railings or such.  Watching your 5yo traverse that will tighten your sphincter.

As for the bike thing, Thing 1 didn't get into biking much when she was first learning and eventually put the bike away for a couple years.  Then, the other day, she decided she wanted to ride again.  She jumped on the bike and was riding around like she never stopped.  We go for rides frequently.

My son is playing floor hockey, lifting weights, amd doing things that are not "risk free".  Back in my day, we climbed a rope and ploe to the gym ceiling...probably 30 feet or so.  Only thing saving us was a gym mat, which would really only have kept bllod off of the floor.  Bike riding sounds like a good gym activity.

My oldest daughter broke her arm by falling off the monkey bars at the same school Thing 2 attends.

In the 2 years since, they've added bigger and taller playground gear. :D

I rode a bike to school every day long before 7th grade  ;/
Freedom is a heavy load, a great and strange burden for the spirit to undertake. It is not easy. It is not a gift given, but a choice made, and the choice may be a hard one. The road goes upward toward the light; but the laden traveller may never reach the end of it.  - Ursula Le Guin

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.
