Hospital protocol?
« on: May 15, 2014, 08:19:36 PM »
I'll be going into the hospital tomorrow (Friday) for some tests, and very likely cardiac surgery (ugh!). It has been a very long time since I was last an in-patient. What's the scoop? Should I bring a notebook computer? Cell phone? If I bring either or both, will I be able to use it/them? What's the probability it/they would be stolen out of my room?

TIA

Most hospitals now have free WiFi throughout the facility as a service to patients and visitors, and you are free to bring and use your own electronics.  Security may be a problem, most inpatient rooms don't have secure storage.

(Also interested in hearing the answer to Hawkmoon's question.)

In other words, cheap netbook, encrypt the drive.
In thy presence is fulness of joy.
At thy right hand pleasures for evermore.

I had to do an overnight about a year ago, and they were pretty adamant about not bringing valuables - they didn't even want me to bring my wallet. I brought my phone, my Kindle, and a change of chonies.

Good luck on the tests, and I hope the surgery goes smoothly!

If you are not going to be hauled all over the place getting xrayed and poked and prodded there should be little problem bringing your electronics.  The paranoid can tuck them under their pillow at night.

Ever since they put speed-dial (yes, I am old enough to be stck using that phrase) on phones I stopped memorizing phone numbers, so need my phone if I want to talk to anybody.  As I hate "broadcast tv" my beater laptop allows me to watch what I want without squinting at the teeny-tiny screen on my smartphone.  It also makes Kindle reading easier.

Cardiac surgery?  Why am I thinking I need to remind you it is a "stent" and not a "stint"?

Pre-emptive good thoughts being sent.  The rains have driven the hipies indoors, but I can sacrifice some yuppies when I go grocery shoppping tomorrow.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.
