India pale lager
« on: July 06, 2014, 07:08:29 PM »
Ever since reading about india pale lagers (http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/india-pale-lagers-craft-beers-category-stragglers/2013/09/09/183a732a-14df-11e3-a100-66fa8fd9a50c_story.html), I have been on the lookout to try one.  I don't go to brewpubs that often, so I was looking in my local stores for something available by the bottle/can, as opposed to on tap.

I just came back from shopping at the local Fred Meyer (grocery/variety/hardware chain in the PNW, now owned by Kroger), where I found a six pack of Pyramid India Pale Lager (http://www.pyramidbrew.com/our-brews/ipl/).

I have just finished a bottle.  It is much lighter and less hoppy than the typical imperial IPAs that I prefer.  It is not at all bad for a lager, which I rarely drink because I find most of them tasteless.  I would have to give it 1.5 thumbs up.  It may be a viable choice for the people here who find IPAs to be too hoppy and too heavy.  This will be a great post-lawnmowing or bicycling beer in the warm weather.

If you do to mind growlers Mac and Jack's African Amber is the best lawnmower beer I've found.

Sam Adams has had an IPL on the market for some time now.  I find it pleasant.  Not something I would seek out on a regular basis, but for a light hoppy beer I enjoyed it.

I certainly wouldn't object to IPLs becoming a mainstay in the brewing market.  I feel they have their place.  I know it's not something most microbreweries can do, what with it being a lager, but I think anybody with the right gear to do a proper lager should look into trying their own IPL.

So lagers are flavorless? Have you tried Dopplebocks and imperial pilsners?

I find most mass-market lagers to be relatively flavorless, yes.  Some of the craft lagers like the bocks, Maizen/Oktoberfest and weizens are pretty good, to my taste.  It sounds as if I should try to hunt down an imperial pilsner.

Are you wanting the hops smell or taste? Or is the grains and other flavors you are wanting?

I like the taste of hops and a full-bodied malt flavor.  Any recommendations gratefully accepted.

I'm not a fan of the hops but I like deep flavorful beer at times (remember I'm the guy who drinks a lot of Miller Lite)

I'm not sure if you can get Schell's Brewery Products where you live but they make some tasty lagers.

I really like their MaiFest, its a little hoppy for me, but still quite tasty.

Not an IPL but Boulevard Brewing puts out a great IPA.

Schell's new "Arminius" looks interesting.  I wonder if it's available here yet?  (I will have to find out)  Their "Firebrick" is a good summer beer.
