Buying a record player
« on: October 01, 2006, 03:29:40 PM »
I'm in need of a good turntable for playing LPs mostly. The problem is I'm poor. I understand the best way to buy one is to find one at a garage sale or thrift store for next to nothing, but I don't want to wait until I happen to stumble across one. Any hints or tips?

Put a wanted ad on Craigslist, check e-Bay for a local table to turn up so that it doesn't have to be shipped(that's how I aquired both my Technics & Pioneer tables),& see if there is a record store in your area.Ask them. Also sometimes electronic repair shops will have tables that were never picked up & can be had for the repair price.

Any family who still think "That Seventies Show" is current events?Maybe they still have their old table collecting dust in the basement. If you're lucky it'll be a Denon DP-62L.*sigh*

Plan on a new stylus & prolly a whole new cart for an older table.

Check out audiokarma dot org.LOTS of good input there. All encouraging. Those folks are the reason I now have a stack of vinyl shotgun targets spinning in the background.

Turntables are just...cool.
Good luck.

You can get a nice new one with a prebuilt pre-amp for under $50 on the web.

I have mine hooked up to my computer so that I can rip my vinyl collection to mp3. I have way too much stuff that will never get released on CD.

There is also a fancy USB turntable for about $140 at:

There's also ebay... If you're not looking for the "audiophile" stuff or the "DJ" stuff, well, there's plenty out there.

I'm looking for the audiophile stuff. I'd really like to pick up an old thorens. A technics 1200 would be pretty good too.

wingnutx, did you have to make your own connecting cable from the output of the player to the input on your computer?  Or are they available with the two sizes of jacks?

I just use an adapter that has RCA jacks on one end and a mini-plug for the soundcard on the other.

$2 at Frys or Radio Shack.

I had a Technics SL-10 many years ago - sold it while I was still in europe twenty years later for a fraction of it's worth when I switched to CDs. There are several on the evilBay at the moment ....

http://cgi.ebay.com/TECHNICS-SL-10-LINEAR-TRACKING-TURNTABLE-WITH-MC-OUTPUT_W0QQitemZ150041522097QQihZ005QQcategoryZ48649QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item150041522097

You could try a google "Technics SL-10"

http://www.vintagetechnics.com/turntables/sl10.htm

For about 250 hits on the evilBay try "record turntable" on the evilBay search feature. There are some in the final stages with bids running well under $20.
