Rectified A Regretful Sale Today: Reacquired A Makarov IJ-70
« on: August 16, 2014, 07:44:06 PM »
Financial concerns forced me to sell my beloved Russian Makarov IJ-70 earlier this year.  Stability at work allowed me to start looking for a replacement, and on Thursday I found a lightly used specimen with the original box, papers, holster, and two magazines for $300.  I still had two mags left over from the earlier pistol, so I have four mags now.  =D  Manufacture date appears to be 1992 or 1993.

As pleased as I am with the find, the slide has some rough edges... the first time I tried to manually cock the hammer, the rear of the slide sliced my thumb open.  Ouch!  Unfortunately I don't think I can fix it without also committing to a rebluing job.  For now I'll just be more careful if I want/need to cock the hammer.

Cool.  I love a happy ending.

Spot blue.

Or:

Blue or black magic marker for tiny nekkid spots.  Just chasing the sharp edges on the back of the slide won't result in a large nekkid area.

Fast temp fix for little things like burred screws and the like.

I'm  a little familiar with those.  My first decent autoloader was a .380 Russian Baikal Makarov.   Still got all the bits -- box, manual, holster, etc.  I sold it off a few years ago to finance something else, but ended up buying it back.

I have a CZ83 in 380 that does pretty good.  Wish I had tried some of that stuff when prices were cheaper for the guns and ammo.

This is why you never ever sell one of your firearms.

There have been a few that I either disliked outright or was ambivalent enough about to sell without regret.  The Makarov, however, stands with such company as the S&W 1006 and M1 Garand.  I am glad to be able to replace at least one of the good ones (so far).

Spot blue, or blue or black magic marker for tiny nekkid spots.

I'm not going to be picky about a used $300 pistol.  What would you recommend for the actual deburring?

Enh.

Those I've divested myself, I'm usually well rid of.  The gun hoard, over time, has improved in quality.

Burred screws, chuck them up (lightly) in a drill, use fine jeweler's file to trim the burrs down, then a fine Al2O3 polishing stick.  (Or an Arkansas stone.)

Back of slide (if I understand what you're talking about), start with a fine grit knife sharpening stone, then just the polishing sticks (or Arkansas stone) to round off the sharp edges.  Clamp (with pads) upside-down in a vise, start at 45°, rock the stick slightly to radius the edges.

I have an assortment of Al2O3 sticks from Coors Porcelain.  Real handy, they leave a polished finish.

With one exception, I never parted with a gun that I didn't regret sooner or later.  Even for trades.  Big regret was selling an M1917 Colt with a bunch of clips, Pachmyr grip filler, and about 100 .45AR (Auto Rim) cases.
