Hollywood hates the gayz
« on: September 11, 2014, 01:03:51 PM »
http://deadline.com/2014/09/hollywood-gay-friendly-study-ucla-lgbt-performers-832504/

A lot of the anecdotes (not all, but a lot) just seem to fall under the heading of creative differences. From what I've read, or heard on DVD commentaries, film/TV makers will spend gobs of money and time reshooting something that had the wrong lighting, or was wrong in some other nuance. For example, Joss Whedon recasting Inara. Not because Rebecca Gayheart lives up to her name, but because of whatever else. Seems par for the course, that sometimes an actor would be wrong for the part, if they're a different sexual orientation than the character.

Depends on their acting abilities, doesn't it?  Pretending to be something they are not is kind of in the job description, and if they can pull off a role well then who cares about who they are in real life?

Just what I was thinking.  You get one of the crazy good actors, all is well pretty much no matter what.  I'm thinking Tom Hanks, Edward Norton, etc...  People where you're shocked to find out that two very different characters were played by the same actor.  You get actors who essentially play themselves with a different name every part as well, they wouldn't be good for this sort of stuff.

In between you have decent actors who are trying to stretch enough, but just can't fool the camera.

odd considering off the top of my head I can think of three actors on major sitcoms that play an orientation that differs from the characters and they do it well.

Sheldon (TBBT)
Cam (Modern Family)
Barney (HIMYM)

Sheldon (TBBT)
I'm not sure Sheldon really has a sexual orientation, but I guess playing asexual counts.
Barney (HIMYM)
I've heard it said that Neil Patrick Harris plays a straight guy with the same exaggerated flamboyance that a straight man plays a gay man.

Robin Williams in The Birdcage.

I doubt there's anything odd about that at all, given how many millions of actors are out there playing different roles, and how picky those artsy types can be. I don't see how it should surprise anyone that a director or producer would just up and find somebody "too gay" for a role, just like they think some other actor is too old, too tall, too school-marmish, or whatever else conflicts with how they envision the character.

Think of it as a free appetite suppressant.

More gay than Twilight?

Roughly on par with it.  A bit below a Barney Frank lemon party, or a man wearing Crocs.

Must be really bad considering one of them is dead.
