Something went wrong
« on: October 13, 2014, 07:15:32 PM »
From an article about the Texas nurse who contracted Ebola:

Quote
"Something went wrong, and we need to find out why and what," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The woman, identified by CNN affiliate WFAA as Nina Pham, took basic precautions while treating an Ebola-stricken Liberian national at a Dallas hospital. Now she is the first person to have contracted the deadly virus in the United States.

There are few details that are known about what might have gone wrong. She wore a mask, gown, shield and gloves when treating Thomas Eric Duncan, who was in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, officials said.

But on Monday, Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the CDC, told reporters that it's still unknown how the infection occurred, only that a "breach in protocol" for treating a patient happened.

Especially considering the potential consequences, it strikes me as incredibly short-sighted (as in "stupid") to immediately proclaim that the infection must be due to a "breach in protocol." What if the protocol was adhered to assiduously, but the protocol itself is inadequate?

Do they not disinfect the suit a bit before they take it off?

I'm right there with you.
There seems to be an epidemic of demonizing of health care workers going around, as well as a lot of misinformation about  A disease that is only handled under level 4 containment by researchers.

Well if the health care workers just did everything perfectly under perfect conditions then we wouldn't have a problem; everything would be perfect.
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

Brimic, that's an excellent point.   There is a correct protocol for people dealing with Ebola and other uber-nasty bugs.   But BSL-IV is only appropriate for labs and research facilities.  I don't know of a single hospital that is set up to actually implement BSL-IV procedures or equipment.  Having said that, it is possible to have appropriate PPE outside of a laboratory for use in patient care.

Nope. When we're lucky, we have plastic gowns to use. We usually just have flimsy (and porous) paper gowns to wear. They're next to useless if you're dealing with anything wet.

When I wear them, they get ripped off and thrown away after a single use. I don't care if they say they're reusable, I'm not trusting a paper gown.

Sure, put patient in a bubble. Level 4 is much mire about engineering controls than ppe.
I'm familiar with and trained with level-a hazmat suits.... I wouldn't want to wear one of those any linger than necessary.

Much rather wear one for days on end than get Ebola.

True. Sort of like the saying that wearing all of the motorcycle leathers is a lot less hot and uncomfortable than road rash. :P

Just thinking about them saying she touch her face.  Well, get some disinfectant spray that works on ebola and spray the people down before they take all that stuff off.  I know there are ways to take it off without touching.  Either way, it sounds like the CDC doesn't want to admit they or the Nation's hospitals might not be 100% ready.
