Quote
Neighbours of the 25-stone man thought their apartment block in the town of Nurtigen near Stuttgart, had been targeted in a chemical attack when firemen turned up wearing bio-hazard suits and respirators.

But it was because of conditions inside the 65-year-old's apartment - described as 'absolute hell' by one firefighter - which forced them into such drastic precautions.

Quote
Firemen had to smash the front door to his apartment down because there was too much rubbish behind it to push open.

Quote
He told rescuers that he had been unable to wash and dress himself for the past five years and lived on take-out food that was delivered to his apartment.

How was he able to have food delivered if the door couldn't be opened?  If he couldn't wash, how did he get to the door to get the food?  Were they catapulting it through the windows?

As was pointed out in the comments a couple of times, 350 just ain't that big anymore.  What do they use over there, 2' wide doors?

the guy is probably all fat. no muscle. if the door was clear and he could actually walk, he'd probably fit. But when he's 350 pounds of jelly and has to be carried out by big firemen on a stretcher, well, I can see how the window and a lift would be significantly easier.

I'm guessing his lack of mobility and not washing originated due to trash packed all over, rather than injury or illness. After the first year or so, he probably was physically immobilized enough that he couldn't get to the tub, much less clean it out and take a bath in it.

The Daily Mail is a tabloid. Take anything they write with a very large grain of salt.

I was recently exposed to the TV show, Hoarders and probably watched too many episodes at once.

So, yeah, I can see this being true under the tabloid buzz.

people are gross. [barf]

Should have used the house for fire practice.

There was one of those around here a few years ago. 900 pounds I think. Fireman cut the wall off the house. The loaded her/him/it/blob into the bucket of a loader and took them to the hospital in it.
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

Lemme tell you a story of a structure fire my first department was involved in shortly before I joined.

They were dispatched to a house fire. Upon rolling up, they could hear what sounded like kind of like popcorn popping and were wondering WTF...

Turned out it was millions of fleas cooking off from the heat. They were swarmed by fleas shortly afterwards.

They entered the house, and it was utter, complete filth beyond belief. Something ran between one of the firefighter's legs and knocked him down. He thought it was a dog and shined the light on it...it was a PIG. Barnyard pig, not potbellied pet pig.

The gear was contaminated by the filth, human/animal waste, etc in the house. They had to wash it A LOT.

Please tell me they refilled the tanker with kerosene and lit it back up.

The neighbor downstairs heard him tapping on the ceiling.  I am surprised the neighbor didn't have bad smell and lots of bugs and vermin infesting their place as well.  Maybe they did.

Fortunately it's not true, there have been cases of obese/immobile emergency cases somewhat rotted and stuck to their couch or a chair, but someone that far gone would have died from clots, sepsis, and CHF long before EMS would expose skeleton and organs from trying to lift them off the couch.
I promise not to duck.
