Making friends and influencing people
« on: January 14, 2015, 07:46:58 AM »
I posted this after an article describing our town council getting their politically correct on. Our gun buy back guy and his sidekick decided we need a MLK boulevard

Cassandrasdaddy: If we do honor king let's break tradition and not name a street like every other city has
It's kinda unfortunate that for the most part if you wanna buy dope in a strange town you can get in a cab have the cabbie take you to MLK boulevard/street and you will be in the right place.

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

Sad. I never deified the man but what he did deserves a better tribute . God forbid that folks clean up the surrounding areas

Huh.  This certainly applies to MLK Way in Seattle.  Not to mention that several years ago, the King County Council changed the name of King County to King County. King County was originally named for William Rufus King but the Council decided that having Washington's most populous county named for a slave-owning Alabama politician was inappropriate, so they changed the name to honor MLK.  As a cost-saving bonus, they did not have to change any of the signage or stationery.

Oh, how I wish I was making that up:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_County,_Washington

Etymology

The county was originally named after William Rufus King who was Vice-President when the Washington Territory was created. In 1986, a motion was introduced to change the namesake to Martin Luther King, Jr.[3] No public votes or hearings were taken on the change.[4]

On February 24, 1986, the King County Council passed Council Motion 6461 five votes to four setting forth the historical basis for the renaming of King County in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.[5] Because only the state can charter counties, this change was not made official until April 19, 2005, when the Governor signed Senate Bill 5332 into law.

The County Council submitted a vote to the public on February 27, 2006 to change the county's logo from a royal crown to an image of King.[6] On March 12, 2007, the new logo was unveiled.[7]

Martin Luther King Jr. visited King County for two days in November 1961.[8]

There have also been a few Rufus Kings- one an early politician and another being his grandson who was a flaky northern civil war general.

What passes for "city" near me renamed an existing street as Martin Luther King Boulevard. But they apparently never formally deactivated the old name, and that's the name by which everyone still calls it. Light poles on the corners all have two signs, one reading "Martin Luther King Blvd" and the other giving us the real name.

Brilliant.  ;/

Ironically we have a local guy. Preacher and the mayor of our town for 20 years. A f'ng awesome man. Got elected in 76 and believe me that was a big deal back then black man from Texas relative new comer getting elected mayor. Won by 8 votes and some folks were not happy. He was so good at his job that three terms he ran un opposed . Another big deal given the time and it was central va. I would much rather we name something after him. He's still alive and retired his son took over his church.
When he took mayors job town was broke. They had to get extensions on paying electric bill. When he quit we were flush were 100% caught up on all road repairs and municipal projects and had a great bond rating. He was a baptist minister and I think he was a democrat but he was pro biz and fiscally wise.
I am gonna push hard on this which should make some heads explode because I am the self confessed racist . It's gonna be fun

I was hearing rumblings from up North.  I thought they were thunderboomers, but I was wrong.  It's C&SD beating The Establishment over their collective head and shoulders with clue bats.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.
